Mali has a population with high fertility and low agricultural production leading to widespread poverty. It emerged against the backdrop of declining leadership in Ghana but grew a productive agriculture. Located in Africa surrounded by important cities and the Senegal River, Mali had an economy based on agriculture but remained one of the poorest countries.
