Malgudi is a small town somewhere in South India. It is
located on the shore of the (also fictional) river Sarayu. Mempi
Forest is nearby.
Narayan has often asserted that Malgudi is a fictional town.
However, this has never deterred fans from speculating about
its actual location. It is certain that it is located in South India,
for Narayan himself said.
Agumbe, a small village on the western ghats served the
screening of most of the episodes of Malgudi Days, a TV
serial (in Doordarsan during the period 1988-89) based on
Narayan's works.
400Km from Bangalore, This looks like typical north Indian
village.

We left Bangalore at Friday night around 2230Hrs, 11/09/2009 . After a long night
drive, we reached in Shimoga (In Kannada, Shivamoga) around 0530Hrs morning, we
took a room there and sleeps for few hours. The Next location was threethahalli

5. Kundadri Hills
It is located 18kms away and 320metres
above Agumbe which itself is 600metres
above sea level. Kundadri hill is in fact a
single gigantic monolithic rock formation with
various outgrowths.

6. There is a small parking lot on top from where
you climb up around hundred steps to reach
the temple - a Vrushabha Teerthankara Jain
basadi said to have been built in the 17th
century.

8. Kundadri, named after the Jain monk Kundakundacharya who is said to have practiced severe penance here,
throngs with Jain Pilgrims during Makar Sankranti.. The single lane road that climbs up is steep and has a dozen
hairpin bends. An awesome drive.

9. The views from the top are breathtaking. We
spend few hours to absorb the beauty of nature.

Around 1230hrs we reached “Malgudi Village” we parked the car near the house,
made famous in the ‘Malgudi Days’ television serial.

owner of the property – who
offered us some wonderful
‘Masala Kurmura (puffed
rice)’ and ‘Kashaya (hot
herbal brew)’. Spent that
afternoon chatting with the
family and learnt that they
rents out rooms on the upper
floor of the now famous
‘Malgudi Days cottage’

Malanthur village
surrounded by thick
rainforest

20. Agumbe has the second highest
rainfall after Cheerapunji hence the
climate is perfect for the King Cobra
to proliferate.
