an oral tradition. Folktales are generally passed
down from one generation to another and often
take on the characteristics of the time and
place in which they are told.

namewas Makato. Hewasanorphan, for
his fatherand mother had died when he
wasveryyoung. He had no brothers,
sisters, cousins, orfriends to takecareof
him, so he had to makea living for
himself. Hedid every kind of work—
carrying heavy things, clearing away the
forest, orfeeding pigs. He never idled
overhiswork, and although hewas paid
onlyasmall wage, hewassatisfied.

starve. Whereverhewent hisemployers
praised him for being sensible, hard-
working, good-tempered, and cheerful.
He left hisvillageand setout into thewide
world & goto Sukhothai.Hewalked along
cheerfully,enjoying new insightsand
talking to the people he meton the
way.Aftera month's journey,hereached a
villageon the boundaryof the Kingdomof
Sukhotai.Fortunately he metan old
womanwho helped her. Then, he finally
met the King.
27. The day he met the king, Makato
impressed him after sharing his
life to the curious king…& when
the king wasabout to live-
⚫Makatosawa littlecowrie,asmall
shell with finegloss used as
money, lying on theground.
⚫Heran topick itupand held it out
to the king, but the king simply
gave it to him with asmile.

Sukhothai used cowrieshellsas
money. Although
⚫one cowrie shell had little value,
Makato wanted to make as much
useof
⚫itaspossible, for itwas the king’s
gift. Fora long time hecould not
⚫think of a way to use it so that it
would earn more money for him.
29. ⚫Oneday he passed byastall
in the marketwhere the
seedsof
⚫manydifferentplants were
sold. He looked along the
stall and
⚫caughtsightof a basket full
of lettuceseed.
30. ⚫Lettuce! He could grow small
plants like that. He asked the
jolly-looking woman
⚫at the stall if hecould buy
some in exchange of his cowrie
shell. At first the woman
laugh& said that, itwon’t buy
anything.
31. Makatoeagerly told thewoman
that hewould only dip his finger
into a pileof seeds; then he’ll
take the seeds that stick to it—
that must be about right forone
cowrie shell-the woman was
amused. So sheagreed. &
Makato paid thewoman his one
cowrieshell.

cowrieshell. Then heput his finger into
hismouth and dipped it intoa pileof
seeds. When hepulled hiswet finger
out, it
was covered with seeds. He carefully
scraped them off his finger into the
palm of
his hand and went away happily,
clutching theseeds.

34. ⚫Now that he had seeds, Makato broke
thesoil and sowed thematonce. He
⚫watered theseed bed everydayand soon
theyoung plantsappeared. Day by day
hecleared moreground and planted mo
garden wascovered with them. Hewas
very proud of himself because he had
⚫donesowell.

36. Oneday the king passed by theelephant
shedsagain. Makatowaited his
⚫opportunity, then kneltdown and
proudly presented his biggest bunches
of lettuceto the king.
⚫The king was surprised & was puzzled.
⚫Makato told the king thewholestory.
The king was impressed with his
⚫intelligenceand industry.

in the palace.
⚫As theyears passed, Makatogrew tall and
handsome. He mastered everygraceand
served the king well. Hewas so loyal that
the king trusted him absolutely. Hewas
promoted to higherand higherpositions
until hewas given the title of KhunWang,
which meant that hewas the most
important person in the king’s court.

beautiful young daughterof the
king. After that,the king made
him the rulerof Mon.

once been a poororphan,
became the king of
⚫that prosperous kingdom.

CONCLUSION:He was happily married to a
beautiful young daughterof the king. After
that, the king made him the rulerof Mon.
So, Makato, who had once been a poor

kingdom.

Makatogrew tall and handsome. He
