The Lochnagar Crater, created on July 1, 1916, at La Boisselle during the Battle of the Somme, is the largest man-made crater, measuring 67m wide and 91m deep. It was formed by the 179th Tunneling Company of the Royal Engineers and generated a debris field reported to reach 4000ft high, leading to significant destruction of German positions. Although it achieved initial success, full control was not secured until July 3, 1916, due to heavy machine gun fire and entrenched German forces.
