7. THE LABOUR MARKET
Basically and simply it’s the study of
Supply and Demand (i.e. selling & buying)
Influenced by various Factors and Trends
that change over time; sometimes quickly
It’s made up of People; Employed, Under-
Employed, Unemployed, Employers, Self-
Employed, and also those considering
entering or re-entering the Workforce
8. 6 PRIMARY FACTORS THAT AFFECT
THE LABOUR MARKET

Employment, Self-Employment, etc.)

LABOUR MARKET

Industrial shifts?
Anything else???

16. INDUSTRIAL SHIFTS
Goods vs. Services Groups
- 100 Years ago….2 out of 3 workers in South
Western Ontario worked in manufacturing;
the “GOODS” producing sector
- Today?... Approximately only 1 in 4 now
work in the production of “GOODS”… many
more jobs created in the area of “SERVICES”
19. LABOUR MARKET SKILLS
All Labour Market Trends
can lead to Opportunities!!!
Determining what these trends
are also means having to learn
to identify the skills and training
needed to participate in these
Opportunities; improving and
enhancing your ability to stay
employed, and doing the kinds
of work you really want to do.
20. FORECASTING
Occupational forecasting = Voodoo?
What’s The “Best” kind of job in the future???
The # of Current Jobs + Growth + Turnover
= # of probable Opportunities
How does London’s
Turnover Rate compare
with other cities?
Slower or Faster?
22. THE HIRING LADDER
(especially true in a tight economy)
1) Boss hires someone they know will “fit” in
(and who will probably cause them the least amount of grief)
2) Boss hires someone a Co-Worker knows
(Word-of-Mouth and Trusted Recommendation)
3) Boss hires from Applicant Bank
(those who sought the Employer out before need arose and
made a good presentation warranting at least an Interview)
4) Boss hires through Temp Agency or School
(let them look after all this, saving me Time, Money, Energy )
5) Boss places an Ad and starts the process
(“Oh oh… Yikes! here come the Thundering Hordes!”)
23. NETWORKING 101
It is not who you know.
It is really about who
knows you.
To get to the “truth”,
to find what is
really happening
in your area, you need
to be talking to those
who actually know.
If they don’t know,
then they often know
someone who does.
24. EDUCATION/TRAINING
KEY = Improving Skills and Staying Current
Apprenticeship – not just for young people anymore
College/University – Continuing Education courses

INTERVIEW WITH ANY POTENTIAL EMPLOYER!!!
