Literate environment analysis presentation
1. A brief overview of the Framework of Literacy Instruction, and how these research-based practices have helped create a stronger literate environment for students By: Kristina Murphy Holden Literate Environment Analysis Presentation
2. Getting to Know Literacy Learners, P-3 Analysis Research To determine students strengths and weaknesses in literacy, and who the student is as an individual, I used both formal and informal assessments. To assess cognitive ability, I performed a running record with comprehension questioning, which confirmed proper reading level placement To assess noncognitive ability, I used the ERAs: Elementary Reading Attitude Survey from the article Measuring attitude toward reading:A new tool for teachers (McKenna &Kear, 1990) -McKenna, M.C., Kear,D.J. (1990). Measuring attitude toward reading:A new tool for teachers. The Reading Teacher, 43(9), 626-639. Using a combination of formal and informal assessment techniques allowed me the ability to utilize both instructional techniques and more scholarly published materials. In the Webcast Reading Inventories, Peter Afflerbach (Laureate Education, Inc., 2010) explains that assessments can include both formal and informal practices to ensure a well rounded result for future use. -Laureate Education, Inc. 3. Selecting Texts Analysis Research I chose the unit topic of Culture, by the classroom teachers request, and the students ability to relate to the lessons. Both of the books chosen will relate to this topic. I chose a combination of one fiction and one informational text because it is needed for students to have a balanced understanding of literature, and apply the necessary strategies to each. To specifically determine what text I was going to choose, I used a literacy matrix. Dr. Douglas Hartman explained in the Webcast Analyzing and Selecting Texts (Laureate Education, Inc., 2010), that creating a 3-Dimensional Matrix to represent diverse categories of text can be helpful for teachers, because they can then hone in on what text is appropriate for a specific students needs. -Laureate Education, Inc. 4. Literacy Lesson: Interactive Perspective Analysis Research I chose to focus on the strategy of text to self connections, using an Interactive Perspective approach using the unit of Culture I incorporated metacognitive elements to the lesson so students can learn how to perform the skill independently, and apply strong background knowledge of texts Using the three student’s literacy level based on pre assessment I chose an an appropriate non fiction text named What is Culture? (Our Multicultural World) by B. Kalman (2009). -Kalman, B. (2009). What is Culture? (Our Multicultural World). New York: Crabtree Publishing. Dr. Janice Almasi explains in the WebCast Strategic Processing(Laureate Education, Inc., 2010) that the main idea of the Interactive Perspective is to teach students to be literate learners who can encounter the textual world and navigate it independently. Using Dr. Alamasi’s philosophy and combining a strong metacognitive element to this lesson, the students were able to begin to understand how background information can be helpful. -Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2010) Education Today. [Webcast]. Strategic Processing. Baltimore, MD: Dr. Janice Almasi.
5. Literacy Lesson: Critical and Response Perspectives Analysis Research Dr. Vacca explained in the Webcast Response Perspective: Reading-Writing Connection (Laureate Education, Inc., 2010) that it is important for students to tap into their innermost emotions when responding to a text, and these perspectives allow for this. I believe with a combination of teaching students to judge and evaluate a text while reading then react and from a personal response to a text a student will be able to comprehension. -Laureate Education, Inc. (Executive Producer). (2010b) Education Today. [Webcast]. Response Perspective: Reading-Writing Connection. Baltimore, MD: Dr. Richard Vacca. I chose to focus on the strategy of Open Mind Portraits , using the Critical and Response Perspectives, using the unit of Culture I incorporated metacognitive elements to the lesson so students can learn how to perform the skill independently, and apply strong background knowledge of texts Using the three student’s literacy level based on pre assessment I chose an an appropriate fiction text named My Diary from Here to There/ Mi diario de aquihastaallaby A.I. Perez and M.C. Gonzalez (2009).
