- FOODTECH Canada was developed through a consultative approach that included input from member centres, industry and government, and a strategy was developed for forming and implementing a Network of Canadian Food Technology Centres. Federally incorporated in 2006 as a not for profit. Our network of commercialization Centres for food and bio-products blankets the country from coast to coast, creating a string of accessible, “centres of expertise”. FOODTECH is a national asset: we bring a competitive advantage to the food and bio-product industry through an network of infrastructure and expertise that is unrivalled in Canada.
- Centres are quite unique vis a vis other science/R&D organizations. Not ‘owned’ by federal or provincial govts, but most receive some provincial support for operations. Therefore, act as contracted facilities to industry, with cost-recovery needs. Puts them in tough place at times with interest to service local/regional industry, but with revenue needs that may require working outside Cdnboundries.A number of centres are quite similar in operations – a few are unique. Two are housed within universities, which evolved from industry needs. Some are more closely affiliated with provincial departments, others less so. All have significant relationships and linkages with related organizations, such university and government research, health related research networks and other food networks. Centres have industry on Boards helps direct centres to deliver relevant technical solutions (Labatt, Canada Bread, Archer Daniel Midland, Wheat Board, Sysco, etc.) Most have linkages to food processing associations and partner on activities, such as training – an added mechanism to maintain relevance. Also many are involved with bio-associations such as AgWest Bio, PEIBioAlliance, BioTech Canada, etc.
- The collective resources of the Network endow Canada with one of the most comprehensive food and bio-product technology commercialization infrastructures in the nation. All have PhD, Msc level scientists on staff that work on higher level R&D type projects; also continue to nurture leading edge knowledge of technologies/industry/etc. Staff have a variety of expertise and backgrounds: food engineers, food scientists, natural product chemists, biochemists, etc.3 centres have CFIA registration for meat, plus dairy and processed products, 2 for seafood. Enables critical test marketing prior to significant commitment.Number of centres offer industry processing (short term) with Leduc offering stand alone incubators for industry to evolve into commercial businesses (or spin-offs) with significant less cost and risk.

- About 80% of the ‘fabric’ of the food manufacturing sector is made up of Small & Medium companies and these are the companies that benefit greatly from support of food technology centres. While centres work with multinational and international clients, it is the SMEs of the Canadian food and bio industry that are most in need of the resources and outputs that support R&D and innovation. As such, FOODTECH centres become the defacto outsource for innovation & commercialization for this segment.FOODTECH members have a direct connection to industry – and are in a unique position, vis a vis other research & commercialization organizations in that they have the combined infrastructure and technical knowledge to move innovations through the commercial pathway.FOODTECH Canada’s “start-ups” maintain “staying power” (where on average, 80% of these startups are still operating today).
- FOODTECH Vision:By combing the collective resources of centres have the capability to leverage excellence and create a best practice model for InnovationCanada has an opportunity to link the excellent resources we currently have into a “made in Canada” solution for the entire agriculture & food sector. FOODTECH considers it can have a significant contribution in the knowledge translation segment of this model.
- FOODTECH provides support to industry to enhance competitiveness through new product offerings, new healthful ingredients, extracting value from manufacturing by-products and novel bio-industrial and agri non-food products. We help industry adapt to vendor requirements, such as Global Food Safety Initiatives, new regulations and codes of practice, and overall, adapt to trends for foods that customers and consumers are seeking. We work with companies to improve their productivity through changes in processing or packaging systems (from very simple to more complex), and identify additional ways to maximize cost, energy and waste savings. Food centres provide access to both physical infrastructure through their facilities and processing systems, along with well established “infrastructure” systems in areas of technology transfer, regulatory approval, food safety, labelling & claims, and market access.
