Lignosulfonate is a naturally occurring polymer found in wood that can be used as an alternative to road chlorides for dust control. It works by binding road surface particles together and trapping dust as the lignosulfonate dries. Extensive studies have shown that lignosulfonates are not harmful to plants, animals, or aquatic life when properly applied, and have been used safely for dust control on roads in Europe and the U.S. since the 1920s.
