If people are asked what they know about the Salvation Army? The first image that usually pops into their mind is a playing or singing music group during Christmas time. Agreed, sometimes
quality and style is to discuss but the musicians and their kettle collect is unique and worldwide well known.
Last December I played in Geneva myself and enjoyed the atmosphere. But My day begun as early as 4.30 am!
4.30 am
The Salvation Army announced its kettle collect by a street marketing campaign. Slogans were scribbled on the ground in the early morning. For the Salvation Army works
highly efficient and don’t wastes its money managers put hands on, too! Thus, being part of this street marketing campaign is an equal part of my job than working on the
marketing concept that is most urgently needed.
Imagine, the Salvation Army works all year round - and so do I! That’s why I decided to tell you something about the 30th of March 2010 and not a usual pre-Christmas day.
6 am - 11 pm
A day in the life of the Head of Marketing and Communications at the Salvation Army of Switzerland, Austria and Hungary is one big construction site.
- Branding: Uniform project, the uniform was an innovation in the 19th century but thatʼs quite a long time ago (for example: Salvation Army will soon have mountain biking team)
- Corporate communication: annual report (building relationships with journalists)
- Cutting-edge fundraising: Online kettle collect (making use of the goundswell, people interact among each other and collaboratively support SA-projects)
- Public relations: Promoting newly developed services that suit people that live their life on the margins
- Social media marketing: Working on a new website that better integrates social media and will be among the best websites in the non-profit sector
The goal is to build relationships
11 am - 01 pm
Preparing a visit of a Masters Degree class of the University of Fribourg at the Salvation Armyʼs museum. The founder, William Booth, improved labour life in England by introducing
corporate social responsibility - as modern businesses would call it today.

- to raise the wages of the matchmakers
- to fight against sweating
- to help the poor to help themselves by labour
1.30 - 2 pm
The Salvation Army is a church as well. In the afternoon I met a young guy actually doing its studies in arts and design, who is responsible for the marketing of the Christian community in
Lausanne, Renens and Morges. We discussed our community marketing approach in terms of the corporate branding project for which with an agency from Geneva was scheduled.
He is doing a lot of social media activities to connect with people visiting the community.
3 - 5 pm
Actually I work on a corporate branding project that will allow simple application of rules and tools for the organization will improve its visibility. The agency, the young guy and me therefore
visited a social institution to understand what branding means in their environment.
10.30 pm
After dinner and browsing through Google Reader and checking uninteresting mails I restart work on an internal communication matter regarding the Salvation Army's StraTEAgy ... that's
the time frame when nobody interrupts my work.
StraTEAgy means building relationships all across the organization as well as sharing ideas for sustainable initiatives that need to be launched.
11 pm
Late I did some annoying work that has to be done ... - for example responding to e-mails.
Taken that 5 minutes are a short moment of time during the Lift conference I consider it as an offline Tweet to you as followers of my open stage speech. As we all know tweets must deliver
valuable content and be remarkable. I hopefully met both criteria and inspired you to rethink the way you work.
When I worked for Swiss Post until 7 months ago I worked highly motivated and did an above average job - that's what my employer's reference reads. I even worked hard.
But now it is different. Because my daily job is based on a reason to change the world even if the world in this context is rather limited I feel working for a world wide
organization giving hope to people in need and it has been doing so for over 125 years. As a consequence my personal "motivation" has evolved into #passion and "above
average" has turned into #full-blown!
Let me summarize: with the following Tweet: Putting in all my passion (not work!), engaging for a cause (not irrelevance!) and feeling heavenly joy (not boredom!)
So, go and find your cause where you are willing to put in all your passion and egangement for you will feel joy - make a difference. Be it for yourself or even better bring positive change to
people that you are connected to. It is up to you!
Thank you!
