- #15 Our bodies are made of millions of cells, like this one here. Each cell has a very limited life span. [next] Some only live a few days, while others last many months. The reason we don’t die after a few days or months is because the cells regenerate themselves constantly. [next] They do this by cell division, as you can see here. [next] Now you have two renewed cells, which age again [next] and keep regenerating themselves through cell division again and again. This process also gives the body a chance to eliminate damaged cells [next] by a process called “programmed cell death” or “apoptosis.” This is important for regulating growth and overall health. This is how we get to live so long. [next]
- #16 Now, let’s look at a cell a little closer. Each and every one of our cells has a nucleus. [next] Cells also have many little structures called mitochondria , [next] and here is an enlarged picture of one of them. Now, the nucleus and the mitochondria are the only places of a cell [next] where you find DNA. Most of our DNA is in the nucleus DNA is essential for all cellular functions, including how the cell works, and how it divides and regenerates itself. Like a CD ROM, DNA stores all information. If the DNA is damaged, the cell’s function can be impaired, or it can not regenerate itself properly by cell division. [next]
- #17 Now, let’s look at how DNA gets damaged. Most often, DNA is damaged by free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive compounds that are ubiquitous in the body and in our environment. [next] This is a DNA molecule that’s being attacked by two free radicals… [next] …literally breaking the DNA into pieces. How does the body prevent this free radical damage? [next] It prevents DNA damage with antioxidants, which are compounds that can catch or neutralize free radicals before they can hurt us. [next]
- #18 Now, here is a scary fact: [next] Every day, the DNA in a single body cell gets damaged 73,000 times! [next] Fortunately, our cells have DNA repair enzymes that fix most of this damage. So aging depends on a delicate balance of DNA damage and repair. Unfortunately, as we age this balance seems to shift in favor of DNA damage because our antioxidant defense system becomes less efficient. [next]
- #19 Now, let’s look at the mitochondria more closely. These are the powerhouses or batteries that generate energy for the cell. They burn the food calories with oxygen to form energy that can be used by the cell in the form of ATP. [next] They have been called the “perpetrators of aging” because about two to five percent of the oxygen they use is converted into free radicals. This is a normal process that’s always going on as long as you breathe. There is little you can do about it. Anytime you convert food energy and oxygen into usable cellular energy, this happens. Now, because of this, the mitochondria suffer 16 times more DNA damage than nuclear DNA and, what’s more, the mitochondria have no repair enzymes. So they depend entirely on their antioxidant defense system for DNA protection! Many researchers agree that mitochondrial DNA damage is perhaps the most important contributor in the aging process overall. For example, when scientists knocked out the antioxidant defense of mouse mitochondria, the animals only lived a week compared to their normal two-year life span! It’s also interesting to note that a cell from a young mammal has about a 1,000 mitochondria, while you only find about a 100 in cells of an aged mammal. Researchers believe that the impairment in mitochondrial function is related to the progressive loss of energy we experience as we age. [next]

- #21 Now, let’s summarize how we age: [next] Here is a typical body cell… [next] …which has a nucleus and mitochondria, both containing DNA. [next] As we age, our antioxidant defense system becomes weaker, leading to more free radical damage to DNA, which causes... [next] …impaired cellular function and regeneration. At the same time, [next] the large amounts of free radicals produced in the mitochondria damage mitochondrial DNA… [next] …which leads to impaired energy production, which also impairs cellular function and regeneration. [next] These are the two major ways which lead to the appearance of aging symptoms. [next]
- #22 Here is a list of things that can cause DNA damage: [next] First, free radicals from your mitochondria, as we have seen. [next] Then, free radicals form environmental pollution, such as ozone gas. (Did you know that copy machines in the office generate ozone?) [next] Exposure to UV light, X-rays, and cosmic radiation can cause DNA damage, and… [next] …those of you who still smoke should know that each cigarette releases 10 quadrillion free radicals into your lungs! This is the main reason why smokers age so much faster than non-smokers. [next]
