LIFE OF PI – WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Life of Pi is a gripping story about a man called Pi – short for Piscine (named after a
swimming pool). It tells the story of how he began going to school, gained respect
after being bullied before growing up and meeting the love of his life. He then has
to move away to Canada with his family on a ship. The ship gets sunk in a horrible
storm while Pi gets away on a lifeboat by himself.
Pi then meets the realization that there is no knowledge of his existence in the ocean
and that the Bengal Tiger he obsessed over as a child is in the same boat as him.
He must learn to live beside the tiger and train the animal to accept him or die.
The film is a drama adventure film, and the film runs for 127 minutes.

THEMES
Life of Pi is a very unique take on the adventure/drama genre. The reason for this is
because the story is told in the past, and with a captivating plot to go alongside it.
To my own opinion, the story itself doesn’t just cover the theme of adventure/
drama (which asks for discovery, problems that must be solved) but it also takes
the meaning of discovery and embeds it in the character Pi itself. He grows as a
person as traumatic and wonderful events unfold during his time out at sea.
Life of Pi is successful because it takes on a different style of drama and adventure.
The story does not make the ending seem obvious as there are a lot of plot twists
and outcomes from what Pi succeeds at.
TARGET AUDIENCE
I believe that the target audience was quite wide due to the excellence of the film.
Due to the traumatization of the character Pi, I believe that anyone under 12
years old would not watch this. However, due to the emotive power that this film
has created, I think that it could be a film for both genders, and for someone of
any age from 12 upwards. This is because it tugs on the emotions extremely
efficiently and anything that is a heart-to-heart screenplay will affect the audience
in a positive manner.
KEY POINTS SUMMARY
• Life of Pi is a drama-adventure film.
• The film is 2 hours long, but is extremely effective of keeping your attention –
even through the religious parts which provide backstory.
• The film has traumatic events – to which the film I believe should be rated 12 and
upwards; but due the emotion felt the film can be watched by any gender.
• The character Pi is thought out considerably – they embedded the values of the
theme of the film into the protagonist.
