This document provides information and support for those experiencing pregnancy loss. It discusses that pregnancy loss is more common than realized and feelings of loss are normal. It recommends allowing time for grieving while pursuing healthy behaviors. A support group is described that meets twice monthly for sharing experiences. The document also outlines personalized support from hospital staff during a loss and various ways to memorialize a baby through a garden or annual service.
How-to Strengthen The New Zealand Midwifery Model of Care
LifeCare After Pregnancy Loss 4x9 WEB FINAL
1. Support
for Pregnancy Loss
It’s hard to say goodbye after just
beginning to say hello. While you
cannot replace what’s been lost, know
that you’re not alone. Pregnancy loss is
far more common than many realize,
and the feelings you are experiencing,
while very personal, are normal.
Whatever feelings you are having now
are justified. There is nothing that you
did or could have done differently.
Virtua staff and
support groups can
help you through
this difficult time.
2. Life After Pregnancy Loss
Chances are, when you are ready, you will be able to
have a successful pregnancy. In the meantime, it is
important that you allow yourself time to grieve,
rest and recover.
Relate
Talk about the baby and your feelings.
If you need personal space, ask for it, but don’t
be afraid to receive help when it’s offered.
Rejuvenate
Exercise, eat right and drink plenty of fluids.
Avoid caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and any
medications not prescribed by your physician.
Reflect
Whatever your faith or spiritual tradition,
reach out to a trusted clergy member, religious
leader, therapist or counselor for guidance.
Record
Keep a journal, write a letter to your baby, and
save memories and mementos. All are healthy
ways to remember and process your loss.
Return
Schedule a check-up with your OB/GYN. Attend a
support group; others who have “been there” can
offer support and hope.
