People use licorice to treat stomach ulcers and mouth ulcers. It is also used to treat Addison’s disease, allergies, arthritis, rheumatism, and as an anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antinauseant, and anticonvulsant. Adverse EffectsDaily intake of 10-20 g/day can cause side effects. Consumption of 100 g/day will result in adverse effects within one week.--Licorice ingestion causes hyperaldosteronism.--Patients who have ingested too much licorice can experience lethargy, muscle pain, muscle weakness, numbness of the extremities, mental slowness, and weight loss, and have trouble walking.--Licorice has anti-estrogenic action at high doses.--Licorice should be avoided during pregnancy.
InteractionsLicorice can interact with furosemide or other potassium depleting diuretics or with blood thinners, and should not be used with these agents.Licorice affects insulin activity. So watch for hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes who are using licorice.
