LICE CHECKLIST
If a child is known to have head lice, the following will happen:
TEACHERS □ Notify the School Nurse the same day that lice is detected.
Note: a student with head lice may remain in class for the remainder of that day.
□ Notify the Project Manager the same day that lice is detected. Because of
privacy concerns, only send the teacher’s name (not the child’s name).
□ Take routine and ongoing preventative precautions: do not allow children to
share hats or combs, do not pile backpacks or coats, talk about lice prevention, etc.
SCHOOL NURSE □ Notify the Project Manager the same day that lice is detected. Because of
privacy concerns, only send the teacher’s name (not the child’s name).
□ Contact the parents of the affected student, so treatment can begin that
afternoon/evening.
□ Share treatment resources with parents, as needed.
□ Once received, submit a copy of the parent note (attesting that treatment has
begun) to the front office and alert that child’s teacher that they may return to class.
□ Advise parents on ways to monitor the child for re-infestation.
PROJECT MANAGER □ On the same day that notification is received, the Project Manager will email
parents of students in the affected class, so they can check all students at home.
PARENTS □ If your child has lice, provide immediate treatment.
□ Submit a note to the school nurse attesting to the fact that the student is
undergoing treatment. Once the note is received, the student may return to school.
□ Check your child regularly at home, regardless of whether lice has been detected.
□ Take precautions and educate yourself on prevention measures: do not allow
your child to share sports helmets, do routine checks before and after sleepovers or
camping trips, talk to your child about lice prevention, etc.
□ If you need additional support or advice, please reach out to the school nurse.
