WHEREAS California State University Long Beach progressively looks for new ways to accommodate their1
students in order to build a successful learning and living environment; and2

WHEREAS according to a student initiative drafted by the LGBTQ Campus Climate Committee, LGBTIQ+4
students are at higherriskforcertain challenges thatincludeharassment,homelessness,suicide,5
mental healthproblems,sexual healthrisks,substance abuse, andself-injuriousbehavior,which6
are challenges that may require additional campus services and resources to promote their7
academic success and well-being1

WHEREAS data regarding retention, academic success, and graduation rates for LGBTIQ+ students at11
CSULB are currently not available, since CSULB’s Enrollment Services and the Office of12
Institutional Research and Assessment does not include sexual orientation and gender13
identity/expression as demographic variables in its tracking and research; and14

WHEREAS tracking of the LGBTIQ+ community on the CSULB campus would give insight into graduation17
rates, academic success, and the services they utilize, which would help the university with18
retention, and shaping services and opportunities for this demographic; and19

WHEREAS the following CSUs have already putting tracking systems into place for LGBTIQ+ students:21
CaliforniaState PolytechnicUniversity,Pomona;CaliforniaState PolytechnicUniversity,SanLuis22
Obispo; and California State University, Northridge2

WHEREAS the Bill AB 620 has requested to the Trustees of the California State University, “…to collect25
aggregate demographicinformationregardingsexualorientationandgender identityof staff and26
students within other aggregate demographic data collected.”3; and therefore, be it27

RESOLVED that the AssociatedStudentsBoardof Directorsrecommendsthat afieldisaddedtothe Student29
Intent to Enroll Form on sexual orientation and gender identity including multiple options (i.e.30
gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, gender non-conforming, gender-queer, etc.), seeing31
that studentsgenerallyfill outtheirIntenttoEnroll Form withoutthe assistance fromparentsor32
family members, and thereby will feel more comfortable sharing this information; and be it33
