I know Eugen Zaharescu from a long time, due to a very old collaboration with the team
created at Polytehnica (Bucharest University) by Professor Vassile Buzuloiu.
In fact, I initiated a research domain, the LIP (Logarithmic Image Processing) Model, on
which the team of Prof. Buzuloiu (V. Patrascu, C. Vertan, A. Oprea, C. Florea. L.
Florea...and Eugen Zaharescu) produced plenty of results. I was member of the jury thesis of
V. Patrascu (2001) and participated several times to the Spring International School
“Multidimensional Signal Processing and Analysis: Methods, Algorithms, Technologies,
Applications”, organized yearly since 1995 in Bucharest University.
If I come back to Eugen Zaharescu, my appreciation concems his scientific activity.

2. In 2003, he presented his Doctoral Thesis: “Mathematical Morphology Extensions for Color
Images and Images in Logarithmic Representation". Such a work is strongly linked to my
own research domain, due to the “logarithmic” context and the general framework
“Mathematical Morphology”.
What is important to underline is the high mathematical level o f Eugen Zaharescu
scientific production. He has proved both he possesses an expert knowledge in a difficult
theoretical domain and he was concerned by applications o f the theoretical tools he created.
At the theoretical level we can cite his strong contribution to Multiplicative Logarithmic
Morphological Operators: notions of opening, closing, logarithmic white Top-Hat
transform... and a novei concept of contrast.
The main application domains on which Eugen Zaharescu proved the efficiency of such tools
are Satellite Imagery Detection (Detecting runways in satellite airport imagery) and Medical
Image Indexing.
He has particularly shown the ability of logarithmic morphological transforms to enhance
contrast and sharpness of color medical images (blood vessels, eye retina...)
In conclusion: knowing the educaţional qualities o f Eugen Zaharescu, considering his
scientific innovations and his interest for applications, it appears me that the candidate is
perfectly able to lead a research team and to teach attractive courses. In such conditions, I
strongly recommend Eugen Zaharescu in order to obtain a Professor position in Ovidius
University.
