Research Frameworks
Theoretical framework refers to the theory
where the researcher based their study.
Conceptual framework is the synthesized
ideas and concepts from different related
sources.

A theoretical framework is based
on an established theory whereas
the conceptual framework is an
illustration of the researcher’s
viewpoint of the study.

Conceptual

Definitions
21
Conceptual definitions are the
theoretical or abstract meaning
of a concept.
Operational definitions refer to
how a variable was used or
measured in the study.

33
The conceptual framework integrates
concepts and ideas gathered from
different sources.
The theoretical framework of a study
refers to the existing theory where the
researchers based their study.
Wrap Up
34
Both the conceptual and theoretical
framework give direction to the study by
emphasizing the main constructs and
concepts in a research study.
The two types of definitions used in a
study are the conceptual definition and
operational definition.

LESSON 1_Creating Conceptual Framework and Defining Terms.pptx

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Prompt: What are the similarities and differences of theoretical and conceptual framework? Suggested activity: Ask the students to find a partner in answering this activity. On a piece of paper, ask them to draw a Venn diagram and fill it in with similarities and differences of theoretical and conceptual Framework based on their schema and/or preconceptions. Discuss the following afterward: How did you and your partner define a theoretical and conceptual framework? What are some of its key similarities and differences? How can a theoretical framework and conceptual framework be used in research? An alternative group activity from the study guide may also be used.
  • #29 The variables presented can be used in an experimental study. The conceptual framework may demonstrate a study comparing online and classroom learning using two different groups, and exploring its causal relationship to academic performance of students.
  • #30 Sample answer: The literature review serves as the backbone of the conceptual framework because it is the basis of the researcher as to how the research process will be conducted.
  • #31 Sample answer: Both are equally important because it provides different information to the research study. The theoretical framework tells about the theory on which the study was based; whereas, the conceptual framework explains the entire study using illustrations.
  • #32 Prompt: Evaluate each statement then determine which is the operational definition. Explain how the statement exemplifies an operational definition. Answer: A is the operational definition because it is more specific and it tells about how pollution was used in a study. B is the conceptual definition because it is more of a general definition of pollution.
