L'edifici fou ideat per a ser una casa senyorial seguint el patró dels palaus urbans del gòtic català amb les dimensions i l'ordenació pròpies del procés academicista neoclàssic. Actualment seu de l’Ateneu Barcelonès. L'Ateneu Barcelonès és una associació fundada a Barcelona el 1860 (amb el nom inicial d'Ateneu Català) ubicada al carrer de la Canuda núm. 6, al Palau Savassona. El seu actual president és l'advocat i historiador Francesc Cabana i Vancells.
