Employability is a key priority for students and educational institutions. In today’s competitive market, an increasing number of institutions recognise the potential of placements and work experience to help their students secure a good job following their course. For institutions, managing the placement processes efficiently across the board can be a challenge as the placement lifecycle touches upon employer engagement, student learning, administration and tracking and more.
At the University of Nottingham, the CIePD have been working with placements professionals to introduce technology into aspects of this lifecycle and would like to share examples of our practice and tools with others in the Higher Education and Further Education sector.

1. After graduation, I thought for a
while about which career path I
should choose. I looked through a
number of different graduate
programmes but the KCA DEUTAG
one really stood out for me as it
offers a wealth of opportunities for
development.
I started my programme in
September 2011 and since then
I’ve carried out a number of
different roles on the T-391(located
in Salym ,Russia) working as a
Roustabout, a Roughneck and a
Derrickman. I was also given the
opportunity to take part in the rig
move operation although this was
challenging, it was also very
interesting. My background is in
aerospace instrumentation, so
drilling operations are still new to
me, but as each day passes my
knowledge is growing.
One of the reasons that the
Graduate Development Programme
stood out from the other graduate
schemes is that the programme is
well-structured. This programme
gives me the opportunity to grow
professionally and build up a
successful career, and so far the
program has lived up to my
expectations.
PROFILE
I see that I have a lot of
opportunities for development
with the company, and my
primary goal for my 1st year is to
gain knowledge in drilling
operations and technologies and
to successfully pass all my
exams. However, I am looking
forward to achieving so much
more with KCA DEUTAG in the
long term.
My biggest challenge so far on
the programme has been working
in the weather conditions of
Siberia. I’m used to a much
warmer climate as I reside in
Baku, and to work in -35 degrees
with wind has been difficult. The
planning of time has been a big
challenge as well, because I am
studying for exams while
completing 12 hour shifts when
on the rig site. Without good time
management skills it would be
difficult to achieve all the tasks in
our schedule, however I really
like my role and I’m happy with
how I am progressing.
I enjoy all aspects of my job, but I
would say that being able to put
into practice the theories as part of
the operation is particularly
rewarding and motivates me to
learn more. The many possibilities
that can occur by being part of a
huge international company excites
me, and I’m also happy that our
company has a good working
environment - any employee is
ready to support you at any time.
I’m looking forward to travelling to
other countries, where I will interact
with different cultures. I believe this
great programme can help me
bec om e a n ac c om pl is h ed
professional in the future and be an
important member of KCA
DEUTAG’s team.
