The narrator is leaving their city behind as they drive away, taking one last look at the fading lights in the rear view mirror. They are unsure of when or if they will return, but refocus on the open road ahead and new horizon. Although it is hard to leave the place they still love, it is something they feel they need to do to pursue a lifelong dream before time runs out. In the back of their mind, they wonder if they will ever return home and if the old town, like themselves, is changing with time yet remaining fundamentally the same, with roots in the past and hopes for the future.
