Visual supports such as pictures, photographs, drawings, and written words can help children with autism understand expectations, routines, and concepts. These visual aids address the visual strengths of children with autism and can promote independence, engagement, and learning when used consistently across environments. Effective visual supports are individualized, used during natural routines and activities, and faded as skills develop.
