South India began establishing itself as a tourist destination in the late 1970s, with places like Mahabalipuram and Trichy gaining popularity in the late 1980s. In the 1990s, many different categories of hotels began opening across South India to cater to events and dining culture. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Bangalore saw significant growth in its hospitality industry to match its booming IT sector, with many international hotel brands opening properties. However, the rapid growth also led to an oversupply issue as thousands of new rooms were added while demand growth slowed. This oversupply put pressure on hotel occupancy and room rates.
