International Forum for Busan UNESCO Global Geopark
July 28-29, 2022, Busan, Korea

SteeringCommittee Member, Australian Geoscience Council
PrincipalGeoscientist, Danxiashan UNESCO Global Geopark
 Background
 Australian Geoscience Council
 National Geotourism Strategy
 Seven strategic goals
 Conclusions
Fauna
Mammal > 379 species
Marsupial >150 species
Reptile > 870 species
Bird > 850 species
Fish > 4,000 species
Insect > 62,000 species
Flora
 Local species > 24,000
 Vascular species >20,000
 Non-vascular species >14,000
 Fungus >250,000
 Lichen >3,000
Eucalytus Acacia
 National Parks: 6 federal parks, 2,016
state parks
 58 marine parks

 20World Heritage Sites
 Ideal venues for traditional ecotourism
 Stories mainly fauna, flora and aboriginal
culture (B+C = Biotic and Cultural)
 Missing the geological and landscape
stories (A = Abiotic) which form the
foundation of eco and cultural systems
 Total area: 7.68 million km² (Korea
100,210 km²)
 Distance between north and south of
the continent is 4,500 km, east-west is
5,000 km
 Climate:Tropical toTemperate
 Geology – oldest rocks (ranges from
over 3.6 billion years to recent),
recording the long history of the land
 Nature-based tourism is Australia’s main tourism
driver
 Australia defines geotourism as ‘tourism which
focuses on an area's geology and landscape as the
basis for providing visitor engagement, learning
and enjoyment’ (GSA 2015)
 On this basis,Australia’s unique ecology and
culture flourish and nature-based tourism has
developed
 Geotourism presents a holistic embrace of ‘A’
(abiotic – landscape and geology) plus ‘B’ (biotic –
flora and fauna) plus ‘C’ (culture) aspects
 Extremely long geological
history of 3.6 billion years to
recent (Archaean in the west, Proterozoic
in the center, Phanerozoic in the east)
 Basically having all types of rock
and at all ages
 Diversified landscapes
• Four geomorphological regions:
A.Eastern Plain B. Eastern Highland C. Central Plain
D. Western Plateau
• Only 6% of land >600 m, highest mountain
only 2,300m
• 439 rivers , 11,400 lakes
• 10 deserts, 18% of all total land area
• Coastline 34,000 km
• Many untold stories: origin of the continent,
all its landscape, relationship with ecological
environment and indigenous culture

 Australia’s top council of geoscientists
 No. 1 advisory body for formulating national
policies associated with geoscience
 Represents eight major Australian
geoscientific societies such as Geological
Society of Australia andAustralian Institute
of Geoscientists
 Total membership of over 8,000 individuals
comprising industry, government, and
academic professionals in all fields of
geoscience
 Follow the development of a National
Ecotourism Strategy in 1994
 AGC supports orderly development of
major geotourism projects (including
geoparks) and activities in line with
global trends and domestic regional
development imperatives
 AGC sees the articulation of a strategy
with a staged and gradual approach as
being essential to ultimately gain
government endorsement at all levels in
Australia
 Geotourism offers the potential for new
businesses, industries and creating
employment opportunities through the
development of major projects
 One of the best ways to communicate the
value of geoscience to the broader Australian
community
 It encourages community engagement and
sustainable socio-economic developments
 By raising awareness of the importance of
geoscience will increase tertiary enrolment in
geoscience to meet Australia’s needs for
geoscience graduates and researchers into the
future
 Seven key strategic goals underpinning the National
Geotourism Strategy
 These seven goals are to be achieved through the set up of
seven working groups within the National Geotourism
Strategy of AGC
 Development of new digital technologies to
deliver and interpret for traveler or visitor, quality
natural and cultural heritage contents ,
highlighting particularly geology and landscape
 Digital Geotourism maps for all states and
territories
 Australian Geotourism Survey (AGS) undertaken
by the University ofTasmania (UTAS) is being
designed as a comprehensive, Australia-wide
research and market-based instrument, delivered
online and through the nation’s vast tourism
operator and organisational network
 To define an approval pathway for
major geotourism projects
 The AGC considers that both the
‘Ku-ring-gai’ and Murchison
GeoRegion projects represents
ideal pilot studies from which a
national set of administrative
procedures for geoparks and
regional geotrails can be
developed
 To establish a framework for creating
high quality, sustainable geotrails
 Geotourism Standing Committee of the
GSA works with the GSNSW, GSWA,
GSTAS etc on developing a national
geotrail strategy
 New geotrails proposed in all states
such as theWest Coast Living Earth
GeoTrail inTAS; BrisbaneValley Rail
Trail in Queensland; Port Macquarie and
the NewcastleCoastal Geotrails in NSW,
Kanawinka/Great Ocean Road area in
Victoria
 To establish a national
framework for geoheritage
listings suitable for geotourism
 The Geotourism and
Geological Heritage Standing
Committees of the GSA confer
with State/Territory Geological
Surveys and other groups
 A geoheritage assessment
toolkit has been developed
 To develop geotourism as a key driver for
celebrating mining heritage and sustaining
mining communities
 Society of Social and Environment and the
Heritage Committee ofThe AusIMM
 Australian mining areas such as the
Murchison Region ofWesternAustralia (past)
and present e.g. Kalgoorlie Boulder, Mt Isa
and the Central Highlands of Queensland, the
HunterValley of NSW, and Queenstown,
Tasmania are to be explored for the
potentials of developing geotourism
 To strengthenAustralia’s international
geoscience standing through
geotourism excellence
 Co-operation with geoscience
associations or research institutes such
as Indonesian Association of Geologists
(IAG), Geological Society of China etc
 Sister relationship between parks,
universities, encouraging more
interaction and sharing of experiences
 Enhance geoscience interpretation and
communication skills of everyone
actively in the presentation of geosites,
enabling the provision of accurate and
thematic information in an accessible
manner
 Develop training packages and
programmes for interpretation and
communications skills development,
with professional development
accreditation, for geoscientists and
other natural and cultural heritage
professionals
 A national coherent, holistic and practical approach in promoting and
developing geotourism
 It enhances geoscience through geotourism, benefiting local and business
communities, industries, academia, students and the geoscientists
 The seven strategic goals are backed by solid actions and timeline, and
supported by both local and federal governments and communities
 Geopark development in Australia is guided by the National Geotourism
Strategy of Australian Geoscience Council and will be the next step after
the successful implementation of the concepts of ‘Georegions’ and
geotrails
