What is Last.FM? Last.FM is an internet radio and music community website. It claims over twenty-one million users in over 200 countries. It builds a detailed profile of the user’s musical taste based on songs and artists listened to on the streamed radio stations or on his or her portable music device. The profile data is then displayed on each user’s page allowing them to interact with other user’s with the same music taste. Last.FM then recommends songs the user might like based on his or her music profile and library.
History This internet radio website started off as two separate ideas: Last.FM and Audioscrobbler. Audioscrobbler began as a computer science project orchestrated by Richard Jones of the University of Southampton School of Electronics and Computer Science in the United Kingdom. Jones’ goal was to develop a program that could filter music to each individual user’s musical preference. Last.FM was founded in 2002 by Felix Miller and Martin Stiksel as an internet radio station and music community website with similar intentions as Jones’ Audioscrobbler. August 2005, both sites merged together to form today’s Last.FM. July 2006, new software was launched to the site allowing users to log tracks played with other media players. Software also included a social networking, a new visual design, a Dashboard allowing users an easier time navigating throughout their profile, and an easier way to purchase music online with the click of a button. In late 2006, the site won Best Community Music Site at the BT Digital Music Awards in October. May 30th, 2007, CBS bought Last.FM.
