Linguistic variation exists within and across languages and dialects. A linguistic variable is a linguistic item that can be realized or pronounced differently by different speakers or by the same speaker in various contexts. Linguistic and social variation are correlated, as differences in speech patterns can distinguish social groups from one another based on factors like social class. Regional dialects are associated with specific social classes or geographic groups, marking them off from other classes or regions through distinctive linguistic features.
