2010 04-17 1 (ma ga) ombres chinoises
My father just sent me this slide show. Before I moved to the USA, I was professionally involved in a shadow puppet theater - Theatre-en-Ciel. We could say avant-garde/cutting edge puppet theater for a better word.
It took me also to South India to research on the music accompanying the sacred shadow puppets of nomad troupes in Andra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, playing in temples of small villages all night long.... Those were the original forms which got exported to Indonesia where they got developed, not to say commercialized. Mostly playing scenes of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, both soap opera epics suitable for movies and theater of all kinds....
Unfortunately the music associated here with the slide show is not so interesting but the conceptual art is brilliant. Enjoy.
