Once upon a time Krakatau was a big volcano with three cones (craters / vents): Rakata, Danan,
and Perboewatan. On August 27, 1883, after series of eruptions two thirds of Krakatau collapsed
in a chain of titanic explosions destroying most of the island and its surrounding archipelago.
Some say it literally destroyed itself into the below magma chamber which then was pushed
again and caused the deadliest tsunami wave and the biggest and loudest bang in modern his-
tory.
THE ERUPTION
Causing 40 feet Tsunami
The Total Energy released equivalent to 200 megatons TNT while Hiroshima was 20 kilotons
The explosion was heard more than 2000 miles
The ashes reached Singapore (+/- 840 kms away), Cocos Island (+/- 1100 kms away)
Casualties +/- 35000 people
ANAK KRAKATAU
After the blast what’s left was part of Rakata and it was predicted that any new activity would
manifest itself in the region which had been between Perboewatan and Danan.
This prediction came true on 29 December 1927, when a submarine lava dome in the area of
Perboewatan showed evidence of eruptions. A new island volcano rose above the waterline a
few days later. The eruptions were initially of pumice and ash, and that island and the two
islands that followed were quickly eroded away by the sea.
Eventually a fourth island named Anak Krakatau broke water in August 1930 and produced
lava flows faster than the waves could erode them. The child is alive and keeps growing at 13
cm per week since the 1950s equates to an average growth of 6.8 metres per year.
Anak in Bahasa Indonesia means child. Add some mysticism into the story, believe it or not,
Anak Krakatau’s center is located at precisely 6 degrees, 6 minutes, 6 seconds South Latitude,
and some call it the “beast”.

KRAKATAU
TODAY
Krakatau today is an area (volcano complex) consisting of Rakata Island (highest), Panjang
Island, Sertung Island, and mount Anak Krakatau at the center. What’s left of Danan is called
Bosun’s Rock could be seen during the low tide.
Krakatau “complex” could be seen by naked eyes from the coast between Anyer and Carita,
and even further from Tanjung Lesung, and the silhouette seen is mostly the Rakata’s which
is taller than the other islands.
There are many options getting to Krakatau, two most popular gateway due to its relatively
close distance and operators availability are from Carita (Java) and from Kalianda (Lampung,
Sumatra).
There are many volcanoes in Indonesia, or perhaps too many, some are impressive in height
and majestic like Mount Agung in Bali or Mount Rinjani in Lombok. Another stands side by
side with other mountains like the iconic Mount Bromo. Meanwhile, Anak Krakatau’s height
is only 300m comparing to Rakata’s 813m. And yet it is a volcanoe of the volcanoes, and
when it comes to deadly, size isn’t everything says Jon Davidson, earth sciences professor at
Durham University, UK.
Getting to Krakatau is simply different and exciting, it’s somekind of an initiation, a one of a
kind experience and you’ll find out only after visiting Krakatau.

WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE
ONE OF A KIND EXPERIENCE
Approaching Krakatau by fastboat from Carita you will be greeted by the colossal Rakata to
the left and Panjang to the right as if the the child, the Anak Krakatau is being protected by
these islands from three directions (with Sertung at the back). These islands except for Anak
Krakatau still preserves their original shape after the 1883 blast with trees growing and cov-
ering the rocks down to the seawater. Being there between those “giants”, floating on the
boat, soon we realize how small we are compared to the greatness and power of nature.
When the child is calm, and let’s pray for it during our trip or particularly during the climb,
Anak Krakatau may seem like a little peaceful harmless volcano. Landing on the dark sandy
beach would be fun and more fun when some monitor lizards would crawl out of the forest
growing on the fertile volcanic soil.
Climbing is not difficult but wearing trekking boots is strongly advisable as the volcanic sand
(soil) is not solid. Sharp, hardened lava, fragments of rocks here and there plummeted from
the crater when active.
And when active and dangerous, climbing would not be possible. But then, you would be en-
tertained by the live natural firework display of a lifetime.
You will also see how nature works forming a new land on the other side of Anak Krakatau
where most of the lava and ashes are plummeted, where new trees grow on its fertile soil.
Next we will approach the Rakata’s green shallow coral reefs for snorkeling, home to the
various colorful fish.
After snorkeling we will land on Rakata beach and meet some greedy komodo-look-alike
monitor lizards which are bigger than those on Anak Krakatau.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
IMPORTANT
VOLCANIC ACTIVITY:
Volcanic activity can change without warning. In the interests of personal safety, trip
details may change at short notice due to volcanic activity, weather, or request from
local authorities.
People with asthma and other respiratory diseases should not climb to Level One of
Anak Krakatau. Participants travel at their own risk.
All reasonable care is taken on tours, but volcanic activity is unpredictable, and no
guarantee can be made about safety on an active volcano.
LANDING / TREKKING / CLIMBING:
We will be:
Landing on and climbing Anak Krakatau
Landing on the beach of Rakata, no climbing at Rakata
Anak Krakatau’s trail is easy to follow and on the way up we will be passing a little for-
est (trees) but don’t separate yourself from the group or guide. There were cases, not
serious though, where lone visitors got disoriented and came out on the far side of
the beach.
Wear trekking or sport shoes, hat, sunglasses, and bandana to cover nose in case
smell of sulphur blown by the wind.
ANIMALS:
There are monitor lizards on Anak Krakatau and Rakata. Beware of them as they can
move (run) very quickly especially when they smell food. And they can swim too !!
Don’t feed them (by hand).
WATER CLOSET:
Water closet can only be found on Anak Krakatau, behind the ranger’s shelter, very
basic squatting toilet, no clean water.
TELECOMMUNICATION:
Mobile provider signal(s) only covers areas near Carita. No signal at and around Kra-
