K-pop originated in 1992 in South Korea with the band Seo Taiji and The Boys who incorporated American music genres like rap, rock, and techno. K-pop is dominated by dance-focused boy and girl groups and encompasses various Korean popular music styles produced for mass entertainment. Some influential K-pop groups are Big Bang, BTS, and EXO. Big Bang was formed by YG Entertainment in 2006 and helped spread Korean culture internationally. BTS debuted in 2013 with "No More Dream" and has won several newcomer awards. EXO was formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2011 and debuted in 2012 with twelve members split into Korean and Chinese subgroups.
