Koonawarra is located on the western side of Lake Illawarra and has many homes with views of the lake, making it a desirable area. It has a few local shops near the residential area for necessities. While there are no major shopping centers in Koonawarra itself, nearby Dapto has large supermarkets and stores. The region has both public and private primary schools as well as a high school, and residents can enjoy the parks and recreational areas along the lakefront.

There are a number of local shops for residents including one on Fowlers Road which has a grocery store,
butcher, baker and hairdresser. There is also an IGA on Parkside Drive, Dapto. Located not far from Koonawarra
is Dapto Mall with specialty stores like Big W, Coles and Woolworths. 2 big medical centres are also in Dapto.
The local primary school is Koonawarra Public School, as well as St Johns Catholic Primary School (Jeramatta
St) which is a private school. The local highschool for Koonawarra is Kanahooka High School (Thirroul Rd).
Along the Lake foreshore there are several kilometres of bike track, a boat ramp, playground, workout stations
and parks.
