Male koalas are larger than females. Koalas are an important part of Aboriginal culture and their name means "ash grey pouched bear." Baby koalas spend their first six to seven months drinking their mother's milk and living in her pouch, and they begin eating eucalyptus leaves from their mother's intestines at around six months old. Koalas live for around 17 years and are most active at dusk.

There are several main types of ecosystems: deserts, grasslands, and forests. Deserts have very hot and dry weather, and plants and animals must survive with little water. Common desert animals include kangaroo rats and cacti. Grasslands are dry, flat lands that can be hot in summer and cold in winter, covered with grass and home to animals like bison and coyotes. Forests include tropical rainforests with hot, wet weather all year housing jaguars and monkeys, deciduous forests with warm summers and cold winters for rabbits and deer, and coniferous forests with cool summers and cold winters for evergreen trees like pines.

Animals reproduce by either laying eggs or giving birth. Birds exclusively reproduce through egg laying. Some parent animals incubate their eggs by sitting on them to keep them warm. Eggs have a protective shell, inside of which is an albumen containing protein and a yolk containing nutrients for embryo development. The embryo develops into a chick. An animal's life cycle involves various developmental stages from embryo to adult. Frogs lay eggs that hatch into tadpoles, which undergo metamorphosis to grow legs and lose their tails before becoming adults. Butterflies lay eggs that hatch into caterpillars, which form cocoons and pupate before emerging as adult butterflies.
