 Kinesics is the study of the body’s physical
movement. It is the way the body communicates
without words. In face-to-face communication, the
message is conveyed on two level simultaneously.
1) Verbal
2) Non-verbal
 Non-verbal means “unspoken communication”.
 It is also considered as “communication by
implication”.
 Non-verbal is devided in to 5 parts:-
1) Personal appearance
2) Posture
3) Gesture
4) Facial expression
5) Eye contact
Verbal means
“communication by words”
 Personal apperance include clothes,
hair, accessories, cosmetics, and so
on.
 The choice of clothes reveals a lot
about the wearer’s personality and
attitude.
 Personal apperance plays an
important role.
 Posture generally refers to the way we hold ourself
when we stand, sit, walk.
 When we are with our friends we are probably
spontaneous.
 We are not conscious about our posture and our
physical movement is natural.
 But when we encounter an unfamiliar situation, we
become more conscious of our posture.
 Gesture is the movement made by hands, head, or face.
Skillful and appropriate gesture can add to the impact of
verbal communication. A well-timed gesture increase the
value of what is being said.
 Gesture clarify our ideas should be well suited to the
audience.
 Gesture are more numerous than any other form of non-
verbal communication. Gesture should be quite natural.
 Enumerative – numbers
 descriptive – size of object
 Symbolic – abstract concepts
 Locative – location of object
 Emphatic – emphasis
 Facial expression also play an important part in
non-verbal communication. It is the most
expressive part of our body.
 A smile stands for happiness, a frown for
discontent, raised eyebrows for disbelief etc….
 Facial expressions are difficult to interpret. Though
there are only six basic expressions.
1)Happiness 4)surprise
2)Disgust 5)fear
3)Anger 6)sadness
 Eyes are considered to be the window of soul.
 We look at the eyes of a speaker to find out
the truthfulness of his/her words,
intelligence, attitudes, and fillings.
