Teaching as a Design Science
• Teaching has been seen as an ART
• But teaching is more than an ART, there
are formally defined goals to reach
• Educational research has been seen as a
SCIENCE: develop theories and
explanations of how the world works (as it
is)
(Laurilard, 2012)
Teaching as a Design Science
• Teaching = a DESIGN SCIENCE: it aims to
build and improve design principles and
heuristics of practice, based on what we
know from theoretical sciences AND it also
feeds back into theoretical sciences
• Design Sciences are Artificial Sciences,
about how the world could/should be
(Laurilard, 2012)
Design Research in Education
(Bakker, 2019)
• Develop theories about learning and the means
to support learning
• Interventionist: changing and understanding a
situation
• Prospective and reflective components
• Cyclic: Iterative process of intervention and
revision
• Theory under development hast to do real work
Design Research in Initial
Teacher Training
• Teaching & Learning Lab Approach
• Pedagogical Design Projects
• SciTeachCenter
• Educational Technology Design Projects
• Bachelor Thesis
Design Research by and with
In-Service Teachers
• Doing design research in your classroom is a
great opportunity for Continuous Professional
Development
• Collaborating in design research projects
together with academic researchers is
mutually beneficial
Design Research by and with
In-Service Teachers
• Sharing your designs within the community of
your peers, like other design communities do
• Building up better teaching practices together
by standing on the shoulders of others
Design Research with and for
In-Service Teachers
• Teacher-trainers & academic researchers are
looking for real-world issues to do
educational design research on
• Reading research reports about design
research projects can inspire you to try out
new things in your classroom
