A smile is infectious like the flu, as when one person smiles it can cause others to start smiling as well. The narrator details how they smiled after someone else smiled at them, which then caused another person to smile after seeing them. They realize that a smile can be passed along from person to person. The narrator encourages readers to keep smiling and pass the smile on to others through sharing, as a large enough smile epidemic could travel around the world and brighten the day of the entire world.
