- In August 2008 I got on a plane and flew to Denmark where I would spend the next 4 months of my life living with the locals, learning about their culture, and experiencing Europe. My slides are showing you just some of the pictures from my exchange.I visited 11 different countries while living in Denmark and now I am back in Canada to teach you about how to go on exchange. Now I would like to ask for audience participation Can you please Raise your hand if you have been on an exchange? And Raise your hand if you would like to go on exchange. Excellent. So I can see that many people are interested in exchange and for those who have already been perhaps you can share your experiences after this presentation. Personally, I know two methods for exchange and I will be explaining them in a few short minutes.
- First I will go over what an exchange is I define an exchange as a living in another country to do any of the listed activities. Study, Volunteer, Teach, or Work
- The general process for exchanges is 5 Steps long First you would need to submit an Application to the organization of your choiceSecond matched with a partner of the organization Then you would go through Preparation where you would learn about culture shock and the dos and do nots of travel Once in another country you be assisted in integrating with the culture And finally there is usually help with Re-Integration, which some find the most difficultBecause of our limited time today I will be talking mostly about the application stage
- Why go on exchange and through this lengthy process? I am sure a few reasons come to your mind Gaining a broader perspective of the world Experiencing another cultureBecoming more independentGetting a competitive edge with employers Or even learning a language. My motivation to go to Denmark was to travel Europe while getting an education
- The program that met my needs was Laurier International. This is a program that I will be talking about today as well as AIESEC.
- Laurier International runs the Laurier Student Abroad Program, which is a program dedicated to academic exchanges lasting between 4-8 months. Laurier International actually has partnerships with 64 universities worldwide.
- The benefits of this program is that you only have to pay WLU tuition. If you had to pay the international rate your exchange might end up costing you three times as much. Also the course you choose to take in another country could be transferrable; therefore, you can still work towards your degree
- You can apply to the Laurier International if you are in your 4th or 5th year, Plan to study full time in your host country, and have a 7 GPA. If you do not have the required GPA you have the option of requesting a GPA Waiver interview
- If you meet all the criteria then you can submit an application to Laurier International, which includes an application form, $125 fee, copy of your transcript, 2 references (one being academic and the other one non-academic), your academic advisor’s approval (Carole Litwire), a passport sized photo, and a photocopy of the first page of your passport.
- If you are interested in this opportunity then your next step is to register to attend a Laurier International Exchange Information Session. Then research your exchange destinations through the Laurier International website or walking into their office on campus. Finally submit your application and good luck! - AIESEC the largest student run organization in the world and specializes in international exchanges. I was president of AIESEC Laurier in 2007 and learned a lot about the program.The Global Internship program is run in over 107 countries worldwide and internships last anywhere from 2 – 18 months.
- The main benefit of this program is that management internships are paid a salary above living costs meaning that you can make some money to fund your exchange. To find the perfect position you will be given access to an international job database where positions in other countries are continuously posted. Once in your new country the host AIESEC chapter will give you an orientation to reduce potential culture shock.
- To apply to this program you have to have graduated within the last 2 years (I think we are all good on this requirement)You have to be under 29 years of age and you should be flexible when it comes to the internships duration and destination.
- The application for the AIESEC exchange program is 7 pages and you also have to submit your resume with a short motivation letter. The fee for an AIESEC exchange is $400, which includes a $50 deposit. After conducting research on other work exchange programs I have found AIESEC to have the lowest fee.

- Now I just gave you a lot of information to remember in 7 minutes so I have summarized all the information into one chart. You can see that each of the programs I have described today have their own advantages. I hope with this information you all are motivated to research further into an exchange opportunity that is right for you. I only ask that when you are standing in the tallest building of a different country and looking over the city that you remember that “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”
