Kyūjutsu (弓術) ("art of archery") is the traditional Japanese martial art of wielding a bow (yumi) as practiced by the samurai class of feudal Japan. Although the samurai are perhaps best known for their swordsmanship with a katana (kenjutsu), kyūjutsu was actually considered a more vital skill for a significant portion of Japanese history. During the majority of the Kamakura period through the Muromachi period (c.1185–c.1568), the bow was almost exclusively the symbol of the professional warrior, and way of life of the warrior was referred to as "the way of the horse and bow" (弓馬の道, kyūba no michi)
Daggers are weapons used by both hand-to-hand combatants and for protection. Their blades can be straight or curved and may have a sharp point or a round hilt.

1. Katana Sword for Sale- Samurai Katana Facts
People who are collecting Samurai sought Katana Sword for sale because of their own
reasons. There are actually some surprising facts about these Japanese blades that not
all people are aware of and these factoids are revealed in this article. Not all people are
aware that Katanas are also known as the Soul of the Samurai. There is a certain
mystique about these swords that makes the name befit these blades. This blade is a part
of a larger arsenal of Japanese weapons to start with used by Japan’s ancient warriors.
The first swords of Japan were actually straight and better known as chokuto.
However, since these can be considered as to be a work in progress the blades were
easily broken with sharp impacts. This is the reason why the swords that follow after that
were made with a curve. Being curved makes the blades less prone to breakage. These
are the foundation of what Katanas are today. Some sword experts consider these as the
start of a long line of heritage blades. Some blades that are thought at first to be Katana
may not be Katana. Later on in this article those who read this will get to know what real
Katanas are and how different these are from the average blades.
The Tachi for instance is an ancestor of modern day Katana however, these were phased
out when it was replaced by the uchigatana sword of the lower class. No self-respecting
warrior class will ever use a sword use by the lower classes. Then came the higher quality
uchigatana that were made longer than 24 inches. In this case, these Katana for sale is
in a class of its own. These were accompanied with its proverbial duo Wakizashi. By the
way when entering indoors and to show respect for the home owner the Katanas were
2. removed however, the Wakizashi can be worn indoors. It would not be practical for
Samurais to have no weapon to defend themselves against surprise attacks by their
enemies. During ancient times, swordsmiths were held in high respect than other kinds
of artisan. Even emperors were said to create their own blades. This is one of the few
less known times when emperors would stoop low for manual labor. There was even a
ritual that involves fasting as well as sexual abstinence before creating these swords.
Sword smiths was surrounded by religious ritualistic ceremonies. There are cases that as
a form of self-purification a pilgrimage must be taken. The work area is marked by a
special kind of rope. This sacred area is off-limits to everybody. Robes of the Shinto priest
are worn during the purification rites throughout the ritual. Prayers were recited usually
under a waterfall. In case there is no waterfall, buckets of cold water are poured on the
swordsmith. Women who menstruate are not allowed because of their impure state. In
general, close contact with women are not allowed. This clearly shows how swordsmiths
view this ritual as a form of religious purification. Not all blades are created equal. For
instance a damage blade created by a well-known smith is worth more than a high quality
blade. These are considered to be equal to national treasures therefore its collective value
increases. Other craftsmen are credited for building the rest of the Katana. The next
valuable part of the Katana is the tsuba where these are valued similar to the blade. For
those who are not familiar what this is it is the decorative hand guard. There are even
cases when these are worth thousands of dollars.
Auction prices for other parts of the sword also command high prices. This is why for the
purpose of good investment it would be better to complete all the parts of the sword. In
essence without certain parts the value diminishes in the eyes of those who collect these
swords. Incomplete swords can be purchase for just a few hundred dollars but, when
comparing these to the complete versions. If there are plans of reselling these it would be
a good idea to complete all the parts to increase its value. The swordsmith plays an
important role however, there may be lesser roles but, are equal in importance like the
sword polisher for instance. The blade will only reach its full potential if there is harmony
between the smith and the polisher. It is like finding the perfect match. There are cases
when the process of polishing takes a longer time than creating the blade. Using natural
stones to polish produces better results than the use of synthetic stones. Fine stones do
bring out the luster of these blades. This is when the sword is transformed into a work of
art. Polishers do undergo apprenticeship for at least 5 years to gain mastery of this craft.
Less known facts includes testing out the ability of these blades to cut through criminals.
They serve as guinea pigs. There were instances when the blades is inscribed with the
tests made on it like for example having the ability to cut through several bodies even
when these bodies are inside a trunk. This is the sharpness test. There was even a claim
that as early as the 16th Century one blade was able to cut through six bodies. However,
because of peace there is less concentration of focusing on the power of the blade to cut.
The Japanese government does not want to lose the art of traditional sword making
because of peace time. The remedied this by funding research for Japanese swords to
3. protect this craft. This is after all a great part of Japanese traditions. After World War II,
granting of making these blades were resume. In the 60s, a society was established to
resurrect ancient methods of sword making. By the way, the term Shogun refers to the
most powerful Samurai who can wear two swords at the same time which includes Katana
and Wakizashi. These Samurais has been given the licensed to dismember anybody who
offends them. However, today, these rules does not apply anymore. There are still other
interesting facts about Katana.
