Clothes lines were invented in 1945 by Lance Hill to hang clothes outside to dry using wind and sunlight instead of electricity. They are made from rope stretched between two poles above ground level, using clothes pins to attach clothing. Clothes lines save money by avoiding electricity costs, are gentler on fabrics than machines, and allow clothes to retain a fresh smell without static cling.
