This document contains information about transgenic chickens producing cancer-fighting proteins in their eggs. A team in the UK has created genetically modified chickens that produce proteins used in cancer treatments in their egg whites. Producing these proteins in chickens means they can be produced in bulk cheaply using chicken feed. Drugs obtained from chicken eggs would be cheaper and easier to make. The project has been ongoing for 15 years and another 5 years of trials and 10 years of drug development remain. No. 1 Worldwide
Big Dutchman today is a formidable force in the Pig and Poultry Equipment
Industry World Wide.
The story started in 1938 when two brothers, Jack and Dick DeWitt invented the
world's first automatic poultry feeding system (chain Feeder). This they sold
around the agricultural shows in the mid west of the United States under the
name of Automatic Poultry Feeder Company. The story goes that to encourage
potential customers to their stand they dressed a “large” man in traditional
Dutch clothing and he walked the show directing potential customers to the
stand. This caused the people to say “let us go to the Big Dutchman”, hence the
name of the company which we all know today Big Dutchman was founded.
The Meerpohl Family became involved in Big Dutchman in 1958 when Joseph
Meerpohl acquired the agency to market Big Dutchman equipment in Germany.
From that early start success came and his agency flourished under his steady
guiding hand.
Over the years there have been a few twists and turns but eventually in 1985
Joseph Meerpohl structured a management buy-out of Big Dutchman from
Hanson Trust and he secured the rights for worldwide sales except for North
and South America. At this time as it still is today, Calveslage, the seat of the

start of the phenomenal growth begins. The growth was and still is in the main

houses, with lower quality feed and withstand some amount of
infections without using high order medicines.
However, the more practical way is to breed the birds under similar
conditions.
The initial data shows that the "Adaptability" can be built up in the flock
as a genetic trait.
The birds breed under suboptimal conditions perform even better, when
better environment is given.
Inputs such as manpower and investments also make it favourable to do
this and the growing markets will accept these birds more favourably.

Koebrugge Farm Celebrates
25 Years as Ross PS Producers
NETHERLANDS - Aviagen EPI has surprised Ross customers Henny
and Marianne Koebrugge-Mulder of Koebrugge Farm with a celebration
of 25 years in business together. Based in a small village called Ambt
Delden in the eastern part of the Netherlands Koebrugge was one of the
first Ross broiler breeder farms in the Netherlands.
Over the past 25 years, Koebrugge bought more than 500.000 Ross broiler
breeders. During these years the capacity of the farm has been increased
from 5.000 females placed to the current 20.000 females placed.
The first flock of 12.000 Ross 208 birds
was placed on May 31st 1987. Henny
and Marianne were initially placing
three flocks of 5000 females/ year.
The rearing was done in one house
and the egg production in two other
houses at the same farm, and every
16-17 weeks a new flock was placed.
During the period 1996 to 2000 Ross
508 was their breed of choice and
from 2000 until now it has been Ross 308.
To the question why they changed to Ross in the first place, Henny said:
“you always have to take into account, what the demand is of the market.
That time in 1987 broiler results became more important and the
hatcheries were asking for these type of birds. Presently in 2012 we
experience still similar demands for the same breed.”
Maurice Sander, Aviagen EPI, said: “We're delighted to have given
Marianne and Henny this surprise. They have worked very hard over the
years and should be proud of their achievements. We just wanted to
show how much we appreciate the work they have done.
“Koebrugge does produce under a high hygiene standard and their
results are always found in the top quartile or very close to this
demonstrating the value in their hard work to produce quality birds.
”We as Aviagen-EPI would like to thank Henny and Marianne
Koebrugge for their trust in our products and the positive support in
several aspects during the past years. We hope to be in business together
for another 25 years.”
Farm Koebrugge is not only a hatching egg production farm but also acts as
an instruction farm for students and trainees of other companies. Marianne
has always been involved with and has been president in many local and
regional agricultural and poultry organisations and with her wide
knowledge she can lead and support many discussions on a wide range of
subjects.
Marianne and Henny have extended their hospitality to visitors from all
parts of the world. As early as 1987, Ross Breeders came with visitors from
the Middle East. They were always prepared to train future broiler breeder
farmers and many of them, recently mainly German farmers, got practical
training at Koebrugge farm.
Highly Pathogenic AI birds
intercepted in Taiwan
A passenger attempting to smuggle thirty-eight birds into Taiwan was
intercepted at Taoyuan International airport. The birds were tested and
found positive for HPAI H5N1, the World Organisation for Animal
Health reports.
The passenger was en route to Taiwan, travelling from Macau. The birds
were euthanised immediately, and sent to Taiwan's National Lab at the
Animal Health Research Institute for testing.
The smuggled birds tested positive for H5N1 HPAI virus and HAO
cleavage sequencing showed high pathogenicity. All staff that had had
contact with the birds are being monitored by the Health Authority.
Under the OIE Terrestrial Code, this event does not affect the current
H5N1 HPAI-free status of Taiwan, and the issue is declared resolved.
