ADVANCED BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING
This document describes three experiments that explored the ability of near-field distance cues to help segregate speech from background noise. The first experiment measured benefits of separating two competing talkers in distance, with one talker fixed at 1 meter and the other moved closer. The second experiment assessed if low-frequency distance cues alone could produce these effects. Liza Kobelt has extensive research experience developing neural tissue engineering techniques. She has worked on 5 projects at the University of Washington investigating nerve regeneration, astrocyte markers, glioma drug sensitivity, islet cell function, and spinal cord injury hydrogels. Previously, she assisted with motion analysis software, bioreactor design, and neuronal differentiation projects at the University of Akron. She has published 2 papers and is preparing a manuscript on aligned hydrogels for neural tissue engineering. Kobelt has presented her work at several conferences and societies.

Drew Endy is an assistant professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University. He is a synthetic biologist who co-founded the BioBricks Foundation and the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. The BioBricks Foundation works to develop standardized biological components that can be assembled like Legos. Endy has also co-founded the international Genetically Engineered Machine competition for undergraduate students. He has authored several publications in the field of synthetic biology.

Improved two-photon imaging of living neurons in brain tissue through tempora...
This document describes a study that optimized two-photon imaging of living neurons in brain tissue by temporally gating the incident laser to reduce photon flux while maximizing fluorescence signal. The study found that gating the laser at the sampling frequency compromised cell viability despite high fluorescence. An optimum gating frequency range was identified that maintained cell viability while preserving fluorescence levels in two-photon images. Cell viability was monitored by measuring changes in membrane input resistance during whole-cell patch recording of neurons.

Liza Kobelt has extensive research experience developing neural tissue engineering techniques. She has worked on 5 projects at the University of Washington investigating nerve regeneration, astrocyte markers, glioma drug sensitivity, islet cell function, and spinal cord injury hydrogels. Previously, she assisted with motion analysis software, bioreactor design, and neuronal differentiation projects at the University of Akron. She has published 2 papers and is preparing a manuscript on aligned hydrogels for neural tissue engineering. Kobelt has presented her work at several conferences and societies.

Drew Endy is an assistant professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University. He is a synthetic biologist who co-founded the BioBricks Foundation and the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. The BioBricks Foundation works to develop standardized biological components that can be assembled like Legos. Endy has also co-founded the international Genetically Engineered Machine competition for undergraduate students. He has authored several publications in the field of synthetic biology.

Improved two-photon imaging of living neurons in brain tissue through tempora...
This document describes a study that optimized two-photon imaging of living neurons in brain tissue by temporally gating the incident laser to reduce photon flux while maximizing fluorescence signal. The study found that gating the laser at the sampling frequency compromised cell viability despite high fluorescence. An optimum gating frequency range was identified that maintained cell viability while preserving fluorescence levels in two-photon images. Cell viability was monitored by measuring changes in membrane input resistance during whole-cell patch recording of neurons.
