- 12. To help otherpeople at all times Our Lord told us that love of our neighbor was like the first law of love of God. Early Christians were known by the love they had for one another. Real Christian charity or love prompts us to want to help others at all times. Our Scouting training will give us skills and knowledge that will put us in a better position to do this. - 13. To keep myselfphysically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. Scouting offers us many opportunities to grow strong physically. To be alert and ready requires us to give special care to those two gifts of soul – intellect and will – that make us like unto God. “morally straight" means we must try to know what is right and true, to love what is good, and to choose it. - 14. THE SCOUT LAWThe Scout Law is really a definition of a Scout. Wearing the uniform alone does not make a Scout. In fact, the boy who keeps the Scout Law, even if he has no uniform, is the real Scout far more than one who wears the uniform but does not keep the Scout Law. - 69. Locate a Catholicchurch as close as possible to the camp site and plan to attend one of the scheduled Masses. Schedules are available on Masstimes.org. Plan to return from camp on Sunday in time to attend a Mass in your home church or a church along the way home. Many parishes have a late morning and some have an evening Mass. If your local parish does not have a Sunday evening Mass, find one close by and make arrangements for transportation as part of the camping trip. Session Three: Basic Skills for Catholic Scouting When Mass cannot be celebrated in camp because a priest is not available:
- 70. If you arehiking or canoeing in the wilderness where the above options are not possible, Discuss the situation with your pastor. It may be possible to have a service using the scripture readings of the day and plan to worship at Mass as soon as that is feasible, even if it is a weekday. - #31 Explain the universal religious square knot. “ Boys, when you earn your religious emblem, you also earn the right to wear the universal religious square knot. This knot will always be on your uniform (it carries up to your Boy Scout uniform, even to your adult uniform).”
- #34 Introduce the connection between religious emblems and the Scouting program. Hold up the “Duty to God” brochure for everybody to see. Then say, “The title of this brochure is ‘Duty to God.’ What is it referring to? [Scouts should reply that it’s referring to the Scout Oath; also to the 12 th point of the Scout Law]
- #36 Explain that the Scout leader is not the instructor for the religious emblems. These are enhancement programs. Parents and guardians will decide whether or not their boy participates in these programs. “ Your parents and religious leaders will help you earn your religious emblem. This is not a badge we earn together as a Troop. We are of different faiths and we belong to different congregations. Each Boy Scout will earn the emblem for his own faith. These emblems provide opportunities for you to get to know your clergy better and to be more involved with your congregation.”

Use the “Duty to God” brochure to identify the program for your faith Check with your council store or contact the religious organization directly. Each participant needs his or her own booklet to document progress. Some religions offer adult manuals for counselors and mentors. Step 2: Parents must review the program guidelines. Some programs require participants to be official “members” of the religious institution. Age/grade requirements vary from program to program. Each program sets its own guidelines as to who may serve as counselor. Some programs require clergy to serve as counselors; other programs allow parents or other family members to serve as counselors. Step 3: Families should talk to their religious leaders and show them the booklet before beginning any program Most programs require that they be completed under the auspices of that religious organization. Many programs require the signature of the local religious leader. Step 4: The youth member needs to complete the requirements, obtain the proper signatures, and follow the instructions to order the emblem. These emblems are not available from your local council store (follow instructions in your booklet). The emblem should be presented in a meaningful ceremony, preferably in the member’s religious institution. The award can be presented at anytime of the year. Boy Scout Sunday/Sabbath in February is a perfect time to recognize recipients.
