IMG in purple – IMG doctors currently make up 27.5% of workforce
In 2020, over 10,000 IMG doctors joined the UK medical workforce. This is more than UK and EEA graduate new joiners combined. (GMC SOMEP 2020)
Graduates with a primary medical qualification (PMQ) from Middle Eastern and South Asian countries made up a large proportion of this, growing by 83% and 47% respectively
Speaker note
On the 3 April 2020, the BMA wrote to the Home Secretary Priti Patel calling for all doctors to be granted automatic indefinite leave to remain. Throughout the pandemic, the BMA has written to both Priti Patel and Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling for immigration concessions so that doctors can focus on caring for patients without having to worry about their immigration status.
3 important speaking points:
Following BMA lobbying in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has seen a number immigration concessions introduced by the UK government - designed to give flexibility to key workers in the NHS so they can concentrate on caring for patients on the frontline without having to worry about their immigration status.
We have written directly to the Prime Minister to ask for automatic indefinite leave to remain for all international doctors (currently on a Tier 1 and Tier 2 visa) and their dependents. These visa categories demonstrate the doctor is already on a path to settlement. We have also asked for this to be free of charge.
We were delighted when an exemption to the health surcharge for NHS and care workers was announced in May 2020 by the Prime Minister, with a refund mechanism put in place for those who paid the charge since 31 March 2020. Something we have lobbied on since its introduction 2015.
During the second wave, we would expect, as a minimum, that the UK government commit to keeping these concessions in place for the duration of the pandemic.
