5. BIOGRAPHY
Joe began to excel in Theater and English at an early age as a student in Detroit Public Schools. He studied
Stanislovsky and Method Acting at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and earned a B.A. in
English and Theater. As an undergraduate, serving as Committee Member, CO-founder, Treasurer, and
Interim V.P./President of prominent student organizations, he had opportunities to exercise exceptional
reasoning and motivational speaking skills. The same passion and determination being a leader requires
flourished in Theater and at the professional level too. Endeavors to become a professional actor after U of
D Mercy grad school include: workshops, contracts with Michigan’s top union-affiliated agencies,
local/traveling productions, studying/performing improvisation, student/professional film work, and reading.
He has established himself in the Metro Detroit Area as a ‘director’s actor.’ He's highly energetic and
inspirational, with a broad acting and age range. In The Silent Cry, he was cast as Shon, a hot-headed
young teen that has to defend his mother from an abusive father. As the shy and timid Duane, in the
Nederlander’s hit production of Big Mama’s Wedding, guest often queried, “Are you old enough to get
married? You look like you’re sixteen or seventeen?” More recently, Joe was cast as John “Pistol” Allen,
who has a reputation for being a party-man and predator of women, in the soon to be released documentary
about the Funk Brothers, titled, Standing in the Shadows of Motown. He has been principle to ovations
received from fellow actors at showcases, and open auditions. As Duane the groom, in Big Mama’s Wedding,
an Improvisational play that brought in the New Millennium, and billed as Detroit’s First African-American
Interactive Play, Joe graciously experienced a rare media blitz for productions in his Metro area. He
attributes his versatility and natural ability to bring the truth to his craft to the truth in his heart. Certified
by the State of Michigan to teach secondary English and Theater, becoming an educator has been a life-long
unraveling experience for Joe as has Acting, where his skills give him the opportunity to motivate young
people. He is a candidate for his Masters, and has been a member of several choirs, theater, singing, dance,
improv, and rap groups. He’s been influenced by the likes of Terrance Howard, Sidney Portier, Billy Dee
Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, The Temptations, and Al Jarreau, and, he has performed in venues
ranging from nightclubs to stage concerts and festivals in the Metro Detroit area. Joe enjoys sports and
