Jonah: A monologue, can be used as a creative introduction to a sermon
It is just wise to not run away from God. Ultimately, you are really
not running away. You are just creating storms for yourself, and the
people you run to to avoid Him only brings he or she into the storm as
well. God is gracious to the ones you bring into the storm. You may
think that the focus is off of you because now it is the people you
brought into the storm who is crying out to Him (the sailors). But just
know that our disobedience will not be his or her problem for long. You
cannot run from God’s pursuit, especially if He has called you. He will
not relent until you give yourself up. Interesting how the word “but”
was used after Jonah was thrown into the water. Even though God
calmed the storm Jonah brought to the sailors, He still was not done with
Jonah. Interesting how after the storm, God brought Jonah to a place of
solitude where it could just be him and God. Unfortunately, the solitary
had to be in a whale. However, this goes to show that God will do
anything to get our attention and to get re-focused on the mission He has
for us. God disciplines only to bring you back to Him. And it is
interesting how our hearts can slowly come to grasp this truth. Jonah
even got the revelation of it, which lead him to thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving lead him to sacrifice himself…his will. “And the Lord
commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.” See, that is
all God wanted; that is all He wanted from Jonah. He just wanted him
and wanted him back on His mission.
