8. JNAC Key Take-Aways
1. St. Andrew’s is a vibrant congregation with It’s own
identity BUT there are challenges:
– Declining: membership, financially contributing
households and revenue
– Sunday services being held at Deer Park,
2. Sunday morning worship (with Deer Park) is
important (critical) for those that attend.
– Connecting with ministry staff and others is more
important than having strong St. Andrew’s identifiable
leadership during the service.
3. There is room for improvement in the relationship
with Deer Park
– Deer Park would like to expand our relationship.
– The relationship and agreements between St. Andrew’s
need to be revisited and updated.
9. JNAC Key Take-Aways – Con’t
4. There needs to be an on going and increased focus
on Non-Sunday activities,
– Growth through Sunday morning worship is unlikely
– Need to make the Centre is a place where people are
comfortable dropping in.
5. The current DLM staff are doing a great job
– supply minister is also doing a good job.
6. The current level of ministry staffing is adequate for
meeting St. Andrews needs at this time.
– Full time Coordinating Minister
– ½ time DLM Youth and Young Adults
– ½ time DLM Children and Families
10. JNAC Key Take Aways – Con’t
7. There has been a significant gap in Pastoral Care
8. Need to revisit and update St. Andrew’s vision,
mission and values
– Vision and values have not been update since before the
change
– How will we carry out that mission?
9. Communication on all levels could be improved.
10. The Regional Ministries Initiative is important to St.
Andrew’s identity
– significant portion of the respondents do not know how
the initiative is going.
– the role of the St. Andrew’s “minister” is to be a strong
spokesperson but it is not a key focus area
11. JNAC Staffing Recommendations
• St. Andrew’s keep its current ministerial complement
– One full time Ordained or Diaconal Minister as a coordinating team minister..
– One half time DLM for Youth and Young Adult Ministries
– One half time DLM for Children and Families Ministries
All of the ministry staff have responsibilities for:
– St. Andrew’s based ministries through out the week,
– Working collaboratively with Deer Park for Shared Sunday AM worship
– Appropriate Support of Regional Ministries Programs
Position descriptions for all of the above roles have been updated to
better align with St. Andrew’s current needs.
– Coordinating Minster (Vision Keeper) - Responsibilities for: coordinating the St.
Andrew’s ministry team, leading St. Andrew’s based ministries and leading Pastoral Care
and Seniors’ ministries.
– Youth and Young Adult DLM– no change in responsibilities
– Children & Families DLM – increased focus on supporting “connections” ministry and
regional initiatives
12. Other JNAC Recommendations
1. St. Andrew’s review and update its values, vision and mission
and their implementation
– prior to commencing the search for a new coordinating minister
Status - In the Process of establishing a group to do this
– Jim Kenney helping lead
2. St. Andrew’s council ask Deer Park’s council to cooperate in
establishing a joint group to develop recommendations on
how the two congregations can go forward together
– for the benefit of both congregations.
– a better understanding of each other’s Vision, Mission and Values so that we can
work together effectively & support each other in carrying out their missions.
Status – Karen Decoux & John Palmer to meet with
Monica Bittner & Jan Vanegteren
13. Other JNAC Recommendations
3. St. Andrew’s council consider establishing a Facilities
Management Coordinating Group
– support the numerous activities that are being run at the Centre
Status – council has this under consideration
4. St. Andrew’s council consider establishing a
Communications Coordinating Group
– ensure clear and coordinated communication with all stakeholders of St. Andrew’s
congregation, the Regional Ministries Programs and St. Andrew’s Centre.
Status – council has this under consideration
– regional ministries held a workshop
14. Additional Recommendations
1. Calgary Presbytery accept the JNAC Report of St. Andrew’s
United Church
1. Calgary Presbytery declares a vacancy for the position of
Coordinating Team Minister.
1. St. Andrew’s appoint a Joint Search Committee and request
Calgary Presbytery to name a representative to this Committee
1. That the Joint Search Committee take sufficient time to find a
person that is the right fit for the coordinating minister position
and that this could mean extending supply ministry support until
mid-2018.
