John Steinbeck A novelist is someone who writes novels, or writes a fancy work of fiction which often has a complicated plot, many major and minor
characters, a significant theme, and several varied settings. A novelist will use literary devices such as characterization, tone, symbolism, imagery, and
figurative language. John Steinbeck, an American novelist, uses many literary devices such as metaphors, similes, imagery, and figurative language
along with excellent descriptive words to develop his characters and vividly describe their surroundings. His masterly of these and other techniques, in
my opinion, is why John Steinbeck's novels, like The Grape's of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, have survived the test of time.

Joseph was a Jungian and a mythologist. He also was the person responsible for getting Steinbeck's Pastures of Heaven published later that year. In
1933, Joseph also helped publish To a God Unknown and The Red Pony Stories. 1934 was an extremely tragic year for Mr. Steinbeck, the year
began good when his story, "The Murder", appeared in O. Henry Prize Stories. Later that year, John was dealt a tremendous blow when his mother
died. John was so upset that he did not write anything for another year. Then when he began to recover and start writing again, his father died in
1936. At that time, John Steinbeck was about half way through writing Of Mice and Men. Again because of John's despair, he was not able to
finish this book right away. But finally he was able to finish it in 1937, and it was published and became his first best seller. In 1939, Steinbeck's
had his favorite year, John was elected to The National Institute of Arts and Letters. He also published his Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Grapes
of Wraith. The year of 1944 had many ups and downs for John Steinbeck. A wonderful event was the birth of his first son on the second of August.
John had to fight to have his name removed from the credits of Lifeboat because he believed he did not believe in racism and he believed it was

In this novella, I developed a thesis statement, which is: The pearl kept Kino moving forward because it represented hope during a period in his
life. I chose this thesis statement because one of the aspects that makes this story move forward is Kino's hope and greed; even if this greed is
based on his hope. Steinbeck quotes: "Every man suddenly became related to Kino's pearl, the schemes, the plans, the futures, the wishes, the
needs, the lusts, the hungers of everyone, and only one person stood in the way and that was Kino, so he became curiously everyman's enemy"

This passage explains that even some of the owners did not want to do what they were forced to do. The plot of The Grapes of Wrath is a fairly
simple one. The families are moving out of states such as Oklahoma and traveling west because they can no longer make a decent living growing
crops. However, if one looks past this simple plot they will find out there is much more then meets the eye. The presence of greed is located throughout
the novel; an example of this is located in chapter fifteen when it goes on to explain the different ways the waitress, Mae, acts depending on the
financial status of the customer. If she is tending to a truck driver, who she knows has money, she will put on a show to lure money out of him, but if
it is a traveler going down route 66 that act disappears. The message, which lies deep down in each chapter, is one that questions the greed in our
ever–changing society. In our society everyone wants to fit in, and many times not everyone is treated with equal respect. In essence, these people are

The 1930's were a decade of great change politically, economically, and socially. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl wore raw the nerves of
the people, and our true strength was shown. From it arose John Steinbeck, a storyteller of the Okies and their hardships. His books, especially The
Grapes of Wrath, are reflections of what really went on in the 1930's. John Steinbeck did not write about what he had previously read, he instead wrote
what he experienced through his travels with the migrant workers. "His method was not to present himself notebook in hand and interview people.

an American author.
Although Steinbeck is still known for many more publications, In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes if Wrath were the three
novels that both started his career and allowed it to prevail, his books are said to currently sell 2 million copies a year (kinsella). Steinbeck died in
New York during the winder of 1968 but his novels are still read all over the country and he is still looked up to as one of the best American Authors.
A writer of immense popularity and public recognition during a career, which spanned four decades, John Steinbeck, a writer of the 1930's, is still
perhaps the most representative novelist of that decade and is still widely read and appreciated.

There are many examples of light and dark shown in "The Pearl," by John Steinbeck. There are examples of light and dark shown through the
pearl, people, and other objects. The main character Kino, who is poor, expects good things coming from the pearl but much darkness comes with
it. Many occurrences of light and dark shown in the book is through Kino's interaction with the pearl, malicious people, and objects valued by Kino.
The examples of light and dark through the pearl are when Kino looks into the pearl. He sees things happening that have light and hope for his future
when he says, " 'We will have new clothes"..." 'Perhaps a rifle"... "My son will go to school,' " because it shows light that the pearl will bring upon him.

Why Is John Steinbeck An Important Writer
John Steinbeck was an important writer in the 1930s. His full name was John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. He was born in Salinas, California on February
27, 1902. A majority of his books were set in California. At the age of 14, John Steinbeck decided his future career was to become a writer.
Steinbeck studied English literature and writing at Stanford University in 1919. He eventually dropped out of the university and didn't graduate
without a degree in 1925. Steinback then moved to New York City. He worked as a construction worker and a newspaper reporter. Steinbeck soon
returned to California where he started his career. He wrote several novels and he wasn't successful until he published Tortilla Flat in 1935. In the
