Editor's Notes
What do you need?Well of course a computer, your own, a friend’s or a computer available at no charge for one hour blocks of time at the Mt. Airy Public Library is needed.Working knowledge of the internet is needed. That knowledge is best obtained through attendance in a basic course offered at the public library, a community college or training from a friend or family member. The library’s series of basic lessons is free to the public. The library offers training many times throughout the week for quick access to the basics. After attending all five you will have a good grasp of the basics. An updated resume or history of your work, school and volunteer experience is necessary. It doesn’t have to be typed up or professionally prepared. Having all of this information in one place will save lots of time when applying for jobs online.Contact information, whether kept in a smartphone, or in a dog-eared address book, is necessary for online application.Having contact info, sample applications to study for a few days before applying, all addresses, phone numbers and names give you SPEED!!! Speed is important when you are filling out as many applications as possible within an hour.Working hard, studying the basics, getting your paperwork complete and straight are tools to give you what you are building on …confidence…..Once you start applying and calls start coming in, the experience will make you feel great.
Here is the handy work station with computer that can be used for freefor one hour at your Mt. Airy Public Library – Requirement 1 Check

The more prepared you are for application the smoother the process will go. Employment applications usually are divided into 3 or 4 main sections. School experience, job history, military experience, and/or personal information-hobbies, interests etc. and reference information.Tip Save time by having all addresses, phone numbers, names of bosses or human resource departments (HR) written down before you start. Even if a company is no longer in business it doesn’t matter. That company was an employer while it stayed in the US, operated a plant, or was sold by the owners to another company.Tip – Did you drop out of high school but worked hard for that GED? Then that hard work gets noted on your application. There is usually a spot to write it on the application. Have the date you earned your GED and other information on your work history form.
Work history and contact info Requirements 3 and 4 Check. Also, don’t overlook spending a little time filling out some sample job applications that you have collected. It is hard to be surprised when you have done your homework.
Just to get started let’s look at some websites that encourage applicants to apply online.
The first website is Lowe’s. Enter their website https://careers.lowes.com/areas_store.aspxUse your mouse to go over and click on the different types of jobs available at Lowe’s. They indicate Sales Specialist, Store Management and Loss Prevention. Click on a choice and see where it takes you.
From the previous screen, the website took us to all of the positions open within the chain. After selecting Store Operations Support, see what is next.
This page brought up six jobs within 20 miles of Cincinnati. Most are within a few miles of the city in urban neighborhoods. One is part-time, the others full-time and one is a management position. Point and click on a job that interests you and see what happens.
Customer Service Associate was chosen. From this screen an applicant can immediately go and apply for a position. Do that.
Be sure to read through every company’s hiring process and policies for hiring. All offers are contingent on the applicant successfully passing the drug screen.
Continue to answer questions and scroll (move the arrows down the page) and click on the word “next”.
See example above. Also note that the screen has an indicator at the top to let you know how far you need to go to finish the application
Now, this is where you did all of the work ahead by getting organized. You can type your resume/CV (fancy name for work history) in the box below.
Keep answering and watch the indicator at the top of the page move towards completion. Don’t forget to scroll down through the page and answer all questions. Choose “next” when you are finished.
Keep answering and watch the indicator at the top of the page move towards completion. Don’t forget to scroll down through the page and answer all questions. Choose “next” when you are finished. Keep answering questions in this manner, page by page, until all questions are answered. Be sure to save confirmation email or notice that your application was received.
See how much time you saved by being prepared? See how examining other applications for other jobs helped you to get a sense for what would be required and how to prepare for difficult questions. Everyone has a job that did not work out the way they liked. Perhaps the worker left too soon or was asked to leave. Just fill it all out and explain what happened in the space to add additional information or in the margin. Just tell the truth and move on.Stay on task and just answer one question at a time. Remember to have your tools handy and ask one of the librarians or the instructor of the beginning class how to cut and paste information. This tool will also save lots of time.
