Jo Spence was a British writer, photo therapist, and cultural worker born in 1934 who died of breast cancer in 1992. She began her career running a successful portrait studio in London but later shifted to documentary photography focusing on social and political issues. Following a breast cancer diagnosis in 1982, Spence's work centered on identity, mental and physical health, and she integrated photography with her training as an art therapist. She is best known for her self-portraits documenting her experience with breast cancer, most notably the image "A Picture of Health?".
