GOD had made a positive promise to Moses that for the space of a whole month he would
feedthe vast host in the wilderness with flesh. Moses, being overtaken by a fit of unbelief,
looks to the outward means–calculates his commissariat–and is at a loss to know how the
promise can be fulfilled. Shall the flocks and the herds be slain? How, then, should they
have cattle wherewith to stock the land upon which they hoped soon to enter? And if they
should slaughter all their beasts there would not be food enough for ravenous people for a
month.
Shall all the fish of the sea leave their watery element and come to the tables of these
glamorous hungry men? Even then, Moses thought there would be scarcely food enough to
feedso vast a host for a month. You will see, my Brethren, right readily the mistake which
Moses made. He looked to the creature instead of the Creator. Does the Creator expect the
creature to fulfill his promise? No. He that makes fulfils. If He speaks, it is done–done by
Himself. His promises do not depend for their fulfillment upon the cooperation of the puny
strength of man.
God as a sovereign gives an absolute promise. And He can do it without fear of mistake,
because He has Omnipotence wherewith to fulfill His greatest word. It was an error,
indeed, to look to the sea for fish, instead of waiting upon Heaven for the promise. To look
to the flocks for food, instead of believing on Him to whom belongs the cattle on a thousand
hills. Suppose, my Friends, this country should be threatened by an invasion of some
foreign power and you, in your wisdom and full of trembling should say to those whose
province it is to guard our happy island–“I fear this land can never be protected, for the
Emperor of China has but very little power. The Presidents of the Republics of South
America have but little influence.” You would be stared at. Menwould say, what has that
to do with the question? The troops of Britain are to defend the land, not the troops of
China, or Bolivia. What matters the weakness of those republics or kingdoms? They are
not expected to defend our land!

2. You would be absurd in looking for help where help was neither expected nor promised.
And yet how commonly we do the same. God has promised to supply our needs and we
look to the creature to do what God has promised to do. And then because we perceive the
creature to be weak and feeble we indulge in unbelief. Why do we look to that quarter at
all? Will you look to the top of the Alps for summer heat? Will you journey to the north
pole to gather fruits ripened in the sun? Or will you take your journey towards the equator
that your body may be braced by cool invigorating breezes?
Verily you would act no more foolishly if you did this than when you look to the weak for
strength, or the creature to do the Creator’s work. The great folly of Moses is the folly of
most believers. Let us, then, put the question aright. The ground of faith is not the
sufficiency of the visible means for the performance of the promise, but the all-sufficiency
of the invisible God most surely to do as He has said. And, then, if after that we dare to
indulge in mistrusts, the question of God comes home mightily to us: “Has the Lord’s hand
waxed short?” And may it happen, too, in His mercy, that with the question, there may
come also that blessedpromise, “You shall see now whether My Word shall come to pass
unto you or not.”
It is a singular thing that such a question as this should everbe askedat all: “Has the
Lord’s hand waxed short?” If we look anywhere and everywhere, apart from the conduct
of man, there is nothing to suggest the suspicion. Look to God’s creation! Is there anything
there which would make you say, “Is the Lord’s hand waxed short?” What pillar of the
heavens has begun to reel? What curtain of the sky has been rent or moth-eaten? Have the
foundations of the earth begun to start? Do they not abide as the Lord has settled them?
Has the sun grown dim with age? Have the starry lamps flickered or gone out in darkness?
Are there signs of decay today upon the face of God’s creation? Have not howling tempests,
the yawning ocean and death-bearing hurricanes assertedbut yesterday their
undiminished might? Say, is not the green earth as full of vitality, as ready to yield us
harvests now as it ever has been? Do the showers fall less frequently? Has the sun ceasedto
warm? Are there any signs and tokens that God’s creation is tottering to its decay? No,
journey where you will, you will see God as potent upon the face of the earth and in the
very bowels of the globe as He was when He first said, “Let there be light,” and there was
light."
There is nothing which would tempt us to surmise or suspect that the Lord’s hand has
waxed short. And look you, too, in Providence–is there anything there that would suggest
the question? Are not His prophecies still fulfilled? Does He not cause all things to work
together for good? Do the cattle on a thousand hills low out to Him for hunger? Do you
meet with the skeletons of birds that have fallen to the ground from famine? Does He
neglect to give to the fish their food, or do the sea-monsters die? Does not God still open His
hand and supply the want of every living thing?
Is He less bounteous today than He was in the time of Adam? Is not the cornucopia still as
full? Does He not still scatter mercies with both His hands right lavishly? Are there any
tokens in Providence any more than in nature that God’s arm has waxed short? And look,
too, in the matter of grace–is there any token in the work of grace that God’s power is
failing? Are not sinners still saved? Are not profligates still reclaimed? Are not drunkards
still uplifted from their sties to sit upon the Throne with princes? Are not harlots as truly
reclaimed as were those in the days of Christ?

3. Is not the Word of God still quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword?
Which of His arrows has been blunted? Where have you seenthe sword of the Lord
snapped in two? When has God assayedto melt a heart and failed in the attempt? Which of
His people has found the riches of His grace drained dry? Which of His children has had to
mourn that the unsearchable riches of Christ had failed to supply his need?
In grace, as well as in Providence and nature, the unanimous verdict is that God is still
Almighty, that He does as He wills and fulfills all His promises and His counsels. How is it,
then, that such a question as this evercame from the lips of God Himself? Who suggested
it? What suggestedit? What could there have been that should lead Him or any of His
creatures to say, “Is the Lord’s hand waxed short?” We answer there is but one creature
that God has made that everdoubts Him. The little sparrows doubt not–though they have
no barn nor field, yet they sweetly sing at night as they go to their roosts, though they know
not where tomorrow’s meal shall be found.
The very cattle trust Him. And evenin days of drought, you have seenthem when they
pant for thirst, how they expect the water–how the very first token of it makes them show
in their very animal frame, by some dumb language, that they felt that God would not leave
them to perish. The angels never doubt Him, nor the devils either–devils believe and
tremble. But it was left for man–the most favored of all creatures–to mistrust his God. This
high, this black, this infamous sin of doubting the power and faithfulness of Jehovah was
reserved for the fallen race of rebellions Adam.
And we alone, out of all the beings that God has everfashioned, dishonor Him by unbelief
and tarnish His honor by mistrust. I shall try now, as God shall help me, to mention some
four or five cases in which men act as if they really believed that God’s hand had waxed
short and I pray that in the most of these cases, this malady may be at once healed by the
fact that God has said, “You shall see now whether My Word shall come to pass unto you
or not.”
1. First of all, with regard to THE CHURCH AS A WHOLE. How often is it true that
she so behaves herself as if she had a question in her mind as to whether the Lord’s
hand had waxed short? She believes that the Divine hand was once mighty enough
to bring in three thousand in one day by the simple preaching of Peter. She believes
that her God was with her in olden times so mightily that her poor illiterate
preachers were more than a match for the scholars of Socrates and Solon and were
able to overturn the gods of the heathen, though they had both poetry and
philosophy to be their bulwarks.
She believes still this and yet how often does she act as though the Gospel had become effete
and outworn and the Spirit of God had been utterly withdrawn from her? In those early
days she sent her missionaries to the ends of the earth. They were unprovided for, but they
went forth without purse or script, believing that He who called them to go would find
them sustenance. They landed on islands that were unknown to man and ventured among
barbarous tribes who knew nothing of civilization. They ventured their lives evento the
death–but they won for Christ the empire of the whole earth till there was not a spot
known to men at that time where the name of Jesus had not been preached and where the
Gospel had not been proclaimed.

4. But, now, we–the degenerate sons of glorious fathers–are afraid to trust God. There are
some who would shut out the Gospel from India, because, forsooth, it might disturb our
pitiful empire over that people. There are others who think the Gospel ill-adapted to some
minds and that civilization must go before the Cross and not the Gospel in the vanguard of
all true civilization among barbarous tribes. The mass of us–it is common to us all–the
mass of us would be afraid to go out trusting in God to supply our needs. We should need
first that everything should be prepared for us and that the way should be paved. We are
not ready to leap as champions upon the wall of the citadel, leading the forlorn hope and
planting the standard where it never stood before.
No, we can only follow in the track of others. We have few Careys and few Knibbs, few
men who can go first and foremost saying, “this is God’s cause. Jehovah is the only God
and in the name of the Eternal, let the idols be abolished.” O for more anointed ones to
preach the Gospel, believing in its intrinsic might, assured that where it is preached
faithfully, the Spirit of God is never absent! The doubts, the fears, the calculations, the
policies, the judicious advisors of too many Christians prove my point that often the
Church acts as if she thought the Lord’s hand were waxed short.
O Zion! Get up! Get up! Count no more your hosts for their strength is your weakness.
Measure no longer your wealth for your wealth has often been your poverty and your
poverty your wealth. Think not of the learning or the eloquence of your ministers and
missionaries for full often these things do but stand in the way of the Eternal God. Come
forth in simple confidence in His promise and you shall see whether He will not do
according to His Word. You shall see a nation born at once. You shall behold the reign of
Christ hastening on when you know how to deal with the world in the power of faith,
believing in Christ, knowing that He shall have the beastly for His inheritance and the
uttermost parts of the earth for His possession.
I ought to say here that while this is a common sin of the Church, there are very many
missionaries who have gone out from England during the last few years unconnected with
any Society. And that there are now hundreds throughout the whole earth who have no
visible means of support but who, by faith and prayer, depending simply upon God, find
themselves as well provided for as those who have a Society at their back. I happen to be
acquainted with some few of these men who have been foolish enough to trust God, who
have been silly enough to believe His promise, who have been weak enough to rely only
upon Him.
And I can say their testimony is that in all things God has been as good to them as His
Word and I know they have been more useful as missionaries and more successful in
evangelization because they believed God. They have proved their faith by their acts and
God has honored their faith by giving them great success. I speak thus not of all–there are
a few exceptions–but still it is the general rule that as a Church, the Church does not
believe God. She believes her subscribers, she does not believe the Lord. She believes the
committee, she does not trust in the Eternal. She trusts in the means, she does not rest on
the bare arm of God. She wants to have her arm sleeved, girded about and robed with the
weavings of man.
II. But I now pass on to a second point. WHEN BELIEVERS DOUBT THEIR GOD WITH
REGARD TO PROVIDENCE, the question might well be askedof them, “Is the Lord’s
hand waxed short?”

5. I do not doubt that I am speaking to some here this morning who have had many hisses
and crosses in their business. Instead of getting forward they are going back and perhaps
evenbankruptcy stares them in the face. Or possibly, being hard working men, they may
have been long out of employment and nothing seems now to be before their eyes but the
starvation of themselves and their little ones. It is hard to bear this. This is an iron that
enters into the very soul. The pangs of hunger are not very easily appeased and to have
want and destitution constantly before our eyes is enough to bring down the strong man
and make the mighty tremble.
Little do some of us know how sharp and how acute must be these trials of famine and
nakedness. But do you doubt, O Believer, do you doubt as to whether God will fulfill His
promises wherein He said, “His place of defense shall be the munitions of rocks; bread
shall be given him; his waters shall be sure”? Would you question the advice of your
Master: “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink?
or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek”?
“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap nor gather into barns.
Yet your heavenly Father feeds them”? “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.
They toil not, neither do they spin and yet I say unto you, that evenSolomon in all his glory
was not arrayed like one of these” ?
And so you think that your heavenly Father, though He knows that you have need of these
things, will yet forget you? When not a sparrow falls to the ground without your Father
and the very hairs of your head are all numbered, yet you must mistrust and doubt Him?
Perhaps your affliction will continue upon you till you dare to trust your God and then it
shall end. Full many there are who have been tried and sore vexedtill at last they have
been driven in sheerdesperation to exercise faith in God and the moment of their faith has
been the instant of their deliverance. They have seenwhether God would keepHis promise
or not.
And now, O true Believer, what say you to this picture? In the cold, cold winter, when the
snows have fallen thick on every tree and the ground is hard and crisp you have sometimes
seenthe charitable man open wide the window of his house and scatter crumbs along the
white snow and you have seenthe birds come from all the trees around and there they eat
and were satisfied. A slanderer who lives next door tells you that that man starves his
children. Do you believe him? Feed the sparrows and neglect the offspring of his loins?
Give crumbs to birds and not feedhis sons and daughters?
You feel instinctively that the kind heart which remembers the fowls of Heaven must yet
more remember his own offspring. But what say you to this picture concerning yourself?
Your God hears the young ravens when they cry and gives liberally to all the creatures that
His hands has made and will He forget His sons and His daughters? His people bought with
blood, His own peculiar heritage? No. Dare to believe Him now. His hand has not waxed
short. Dare to trust Him now. Please not Satan and vex not yourself by indulging any more
those hard thoughts of Him. Say, “My Father, You will hear my cry. You will supply all my
needs.” And according to your faith, so shall it be done unto you.
Look back, Sir, look back upon the peat! How many deliverances have you had? You have
been in as bad a plight as this before–did He leave you then? He has been with you in six
troubles and are there not six arguments why He should not leave you in the seventh? You
are growing gray-headed and you have found Him faithful for sixty years. Ah, how few

6. more you have to live! Suppose you live till seventy–there are but ten! He has been faithful
to you in sixty and can you not trust Him with ten?
Surely you ought to say and you must say, I think, if you are actuated by a right spirit, “O
God, I leave all things in Your hand. I will have done with these cares. I will leave
everything to You. I know that You love me and will not forsake Your own but will surely
deliver them out of all their temptations.” You shall have my text fulfilled to you, I trust–
“You shall see now whether My Word shall come to pass unto you or not.
III. But to proceed–there is a third way by which this question might be very naturally
suggestedand that is WHEN A MAN WHO HAS FAITH IN CHRIST IS EXERCISED
WITH DOUBTS AND FEARS WITH REGARD TO HIS OWN FINAL
PERSEVERANCE OR HIS OWN PRESENT ACCEPTANCE IN CHRIST.
I must confess here, with sorrow, that I have seasons of despondency and depression of
spirit which I trust none of you are called to suffer. And at such times I have doubted my
interest in Christ, my calling my election, my perseverance, my Savior’s blood and my
Father’s love. I am sorry I evertold you that, but having done so on one occasion, I make
now my humble apology as before God for it.
I met with a sharp rebuke this last week. A Brother who lives very near to God–I believe
one of the honest men living–told me he never had a doubt of his acceptance once he
believed in Christ and another Christian confirmed his testimony. I do not question the
Truth of my Brethren, but I do envy them. ‘Tis a wondrous position to stand in!
I know how it is. They both of them live by simple faith upon the Son of God and one of
them said to me, “When I speak to some of the friends and tell them they should not doubt
and fear, they say, ‘Yes, but our minister has doubts and fears.’ ” When he said that, I felt
how wrong I had been, because the pastor should be an example to the flock and if I have
sinned in this respect, as I must sorrowfully confess I have, at least there was no necessity
that I should have said so, for now it gives cause to some of the weak of the flock to excuse
themselves.
My Brethren, if I should stand here and say I occasionally steal my neighbor’s goods, you
would be shocked at me. But when I said that I sometimes doubt my God, you were not
shocked. There is as much guilt in the one as in the other. There is the highest degree of
criminality in connection with doubting God and I feel it so. I do not see that we ought to
offer any excuse whatever for our doubting our God. He does not deserve it of us–He is a
true and faithful God and with so many instances of His love and of His kindness as I have
received and daily receive at His hands, I feel I have no excuse to offer either to Him or to
you for having dared to doubt Him.
‘Twas a wicked rein. 'Twas a great and grievous offense. But I pray you, do not use that sin
on my part as a cloak for yourselves. I pray that I may be delivered from it entirely and
with an unstaggering faith, like Abraham, know that what He has promised He is able also
to perform. And then I trust I shall not have under my pastoral care a puny race of men
who cannot trust their God and who cannot, therefore, do anything–but a strong host of
heroes who live by faith upon the Son of God–who loved them and gave Himself for them.
Who shall be a thundering legion. Whose march to battle shall be but a march to victory
and the drawing of whose swords shall be but the prelude and prophecy of their triumph.

7. Take not me as an example further than I follow my Lord, but pray for me that my faith
may be increased. Doubt not, I pray you. Believe your God and you shall prosper. The joy
of the Lord is our strength, not the melancholy of our hearts. It does not say, “He that
doubts shall be saved,” but “He that believes shall be saved.”
I know some ministers preach up doubts and fears so much that you would really think
that doubting was the way to Heaven. And the more you could doubt and fear, the more
proof there would be that you were a child of God. The fact is–the children of God do
doubt and fear. I am sorry to say all of them (not all of them–I question whether all of them
do not, but still my Brother says he does not and I believe him. I fear, however, he will
doubt one of these days, I hope he never may. But when he does, it will be very wrong and
very wicked of him, indeed, just as it has been with me and as it has been with you), for
when we doubt, it is sin.
Oh cursed sin of unbelief! Most damnable of sins, because it so stains God’s honor and so
makes the enemy to blaspheme. “There,” say they, “there is a man who cannot trust his
God. A minister who cannot trust his God. A Christian that cannot repose upon the
promise of the Almighty.” We cannot measure the guilt of sins–all sins are all base and
vile–but there are crimes which we set down as being very heinous, which, I believe, are but
little when compared with that which we think so trivial–the sin of doubting God and
mistrusting His promise.
If unbelief is like a thistle in the field, which proves that the soil is good, or it would not
produce thistles–at any rate that is no reason why you and I should sow thistle seed. Let us
cut the thistles up if there are any and may the Holy Spirit plant the evergreen fir of hope,
the towering pine of love and the hardy box tree of faith. Trust in the Lord. “Rejoice in the
Lord always and again I say, rejoice.” Let your joy be full. Be you not cast down and
troubled, but rejoice in Him evermore.
IV. I shall now pass on to a fourth point very briefly–“is the Lord’s hand waxed short?”
This is a question which I may well ask of any here present who are CONVINCED OF SIN,
BUT ARE AFRAID TO TRUST THEIR SOUL NOW, AT THIS VERY HOUR, IN THE
HAND OF A LOVING SAVIOR.
“Oh, He cannot save me, I am so guilty, so callous! Could I repent as I ought, could I but
feel as I ought, then He could save me. But I am naked and poor and miserable. How can
He clothe, enrich and bless me? I am cast out from His presence. I have grieved away His
Spirit. I have sinned against light and knowledge–against mercy–against constant grace
received. He cannot save me.” “And the Lord said unto Moses, Is the Lord’s hand waxed
short? You shall see now whether My Word shall come to past unto you or not.”
Did He not save the chief of sinners, Saul of Tarsus? Why, then, can He not save you? Is it
not written, “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son, cleans us from all sin”? Has that blood lost
its efficacy? Have Christ’s merits lost their savor? Are they no more an offering of a sweet
smell before the Throne of God? Has His sacrifice lost its plea and the plea its authority? Is
He no longer prevalent before the Father’s face? Soul! Soul! Soul! Would you add to your
sin? Then doubt Christ’s power to save you. Would you seal your doom? Then through this
mock humility distrust Christ.
But would you be saved? Then dare, I pray you, in the teeth of all your sins, to trust my
Master–

8. “He is able
He is willing: doubt no more.”
He is able, for He is God. What can He not perform? He is willing, for He was the
slaughtered Man. And He that died and had His heart rent for us cannot be unwilling. Do
you wish to stab Him in the most tender point and vex Him? Then indulge that mean,
ungenerous thought that He is unwilling to forgive. But would you wish to honor Him and
relieve yourself at the same time? Then stepout of all appearances, all hopes and fears
suggestedby your own feelings. Come to the foot of His Cross and looking up into those
eyes full of languid pity and to those hands streaming with precious blood, say, “Jesus, I
believe. Help You my unbelief,” and so you shall see whether He will not keepHis Word.
If you should come to Him and He should refuse, then would He not have broken His
promise? Did He not say, “Him that comes unto He, I will in no wise cast out”? “But, O Sir,
I am so black a sinner, I am one of Satan’s castaways.” But what if you are? Christ did not
make any exception. He said, “Him that comes,” and that means any “him” in all the world
who comes. If with weeping and with supplication, mourning for past sins, you will go to
Him now, poor Sinner, you will find Him quite as good as His Word and you shall wonder
and be astonished to find your own hardness of heart suddenly taken away and all your
load of guilt removed.
Oh, I would that I had words, that this heart had language and needed not to employ dull
flesh with which to utter its thoughts! Soul, Soul, my Lord is worthy of your faith! I trusted
Him. This poor man cried and the Lord heard him. I looked unto Him and was lightened
and my face was not ashamed and–
“Ever since by faith I saw the stream,
His flowing wounds supply;
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.”
Oh, if you knew my Savior. If you knew Him, you must trust Him! Surely if you will but
think of the tens of thousands that are around the Throne today, singing the song of grace,
each one of these would seemto say to you, “Sinner, trust Him. He was true to me.” If
God’s people who are here this morning could stand up and speak, I know their testimony
would be, “Soul, trust Him–He has been good and true to me.” Ah, my Lord, why have
You not cast some of us away long ago? When we think of our unbelief and our repeated
backsliding, the wonder is that You have not torn up the marriage-bond and said, “He
shall go–he shall go–he has rebelled against Me. He is as a backsliding heifer and as a
bullock unaccustomed to the yoke.”
But no. The strong love of God which first laid hold of us has never let go its grip. He has
kept us when we have forsaken Him, pardoned all our shortcomings and blotted out all our
trespasses. And here we are to bear witness that He is a God ready to forgive, passing by
iniquity, transgression and sin. Sinner, in the name of Jesus of Nazareth, I command you–
believe on Christ and–“As though God did beseechyou by me, I pray you, in Christ’s
place, be reconciled to God.” Think not that He is hard towards you. Jehovah’s heart
yearns to clasp His Ephraims to His breast. Prodigal! Your Father sees you–come, He will
meet you–He’ll kiss you, He’ll clothe you, He’ll make a banquet for you. He will bring forth
music and dancing. And His own heart will have the sweetest of the music in itself. Come,

9. then, come, I pray you–trust Him and leaving all else behind, of good or bad which belongs
to you, come empty to be filled. Come naked to be clothed.
1. I have but now one other point and I shall not detain you, probably two moments,
while I dwell upon it. The subject would not be complete without it. It has been said
of some preachers of the Word and especially of me that we delight to preach
damnation and the fires of Hell. I think that all who have heard me constantly know
that a more unfounded libel was never uttered against any living man. I have
preached terrible sermons. They have been few and far between. But I have never
preached them with a tearless eye. It has everbeen to me a far greater misery to
preach than it has been to any to hear. And this last sentence or two, with which I
conclude, is wrung from my very soul.
And you say, do you, that God will not avenge your sins upon you–that you may go on in
your iniquities and yet meet with no punishment? That you may reject Christ and do it
safely? Trample on His blood and yet God is so calm that His anger will never flame forth
against you? Well Soul, well Soul, “you shall see whether His Word shall come to pass or
not.” But let me tell you His hand is not waxed short. He is as strong to punish as when He
bade the floods cover the earth. As powerful to avenge as when He rained hail out of
Heaven upon the cities of the plain.
He is today as mighty to overtake and punish His enemies as when He sent the angel
through the midst of Egypt, or afterwards smote the hosts of Senacherib. You shall see
whether He will keepHis Word or not. Go on in the neglect of His great salvation. Go to
your dying bed and buoy yourself up with the false hope that there is no hereafter, no Hell
to come. But, Sinner, you shall see. You shall see. This point in dispute shall not long be a
matter of question to be laughed at on the one side and to be taught with tears on the other.
You shall see and we are willing enough ourselves to wait that time, only, Soul, when you
shall see, it will be too late to escape.
When the fire gets hold upon you. When the hail of God begins to dash you in pieces and
there shall be none to deliver, where will your infidelity be then? Where your hard sayings
against God’s earnest ministers then? You will use another note and sing another tune and
yell another cry. O God, grant that none among us may everdare to doubt You here and
think that You can not and will not punish us.

What is the significance of the right hand of
God?
In ancient times, a person with high or highest rank stood to the king's right side. Even today, a
person may be called someone's "right hand man" or "wingman" when he or she serves as the
closest person to another leader. An example of this can be found in Genesis 48:13-14 where
Jacob blessed the child who would receive a greater blessing with his right hand. The right hand
of God likewise relates to this concept of someone being right next to God, acknowledging both
authority and closeness to Him.
While God the Father does not consist of a physical body like humans do, the right hand of God
is often used figuratively in Scripture. In the Old Testament, the phrase is used to refer to the
coming Messiah. For example, Psalm 110:1 predicts, "The LORD says to my Lord: 'Sit at my
right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool'" (also quoted in Matthew 22:44). Psalm
118:16 adds, "the right hand of the LORD exalts, the right hand of the LORD does valiantly!"
In the New Testament, we find additional expressions of this phrase in reference to Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:20-21 notes, "…that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and
seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power
and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to
come." Romans 8:34 teaches, "Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than
that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us."
In fact, many times the New Testament writers use "the right hand of God" to express where
Jesus is now. Mark 16:19 shares, "So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken
up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God." Acts 2:33 shares a portion of Peter's
sermon on Pentecost that includes, "Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having
received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you
yourselves are seeing and hearing." The first martyr Stephen was said to have looked into the sky
and saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God (Acts 7:55). Colossians 3:1 also notes that Jesus
is seated at the right hand of God.
Hebrews 10:12-13 describes this right hand of God as a place of honor and exaltation for Jesus,
sharing, "But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the
right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his

11. feet." This location gives Him reign over all powers: "Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven
and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to
him" (1 Peter 3:21-22).
The right hand of God, therefore, is a reference to both a place of proximity to God the Father
and a position of power above all other powers. Jesus the Messiah exists at this right hand of
God today, perfectly reigning with God the Father and God the Spirit in community and power.

The Right Hand of God
The Bible clearly teaches that God is One: “There is no God with Me.” (Deuteronomy 22:39) “I
am Jehovah (Yahweh) and there is none else. There is no other God besides Me, a just God and a
Savior; there is none besides Me.” (Isaiah 45:5, 21) “My glory I will not give to another.” (Isaiah
42:8, 48:11)
Some people who know these teachings find it confusing to read passages about Jesus being “at
the right hand of God.” If Jesus is God, how can He be “at the right hand” of God? Jesus is
called “the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father” (Isaiah 9:6), “God-with-us” (Matthew 1:23), and
“the True God” (1 John 5:20). Can God be at His own right hand?
Human Limitations Ascribed to God
To understand “the right hand of God” we need to know that the Bible often describes God in
ways that aren’t meant to be taken literally. For example, the Bible describes God in terms of
imperfect human qualities—not because He actually has those qualities, but because it is a way
for us imperfect humans to understand Him better.
For example, the Bible says that God rests (Genesis 2:2, 3; Exodus 20:11; 31:17; Deuteronomy
5:14; Hebrews 4:4, 10) and wakes up (Psalm 44:23;78:65) when in actual fact the Lord is never
weary (Isaiah40:28) nor sleeps. (Psalm 121:4) It says God goes “down” (Genesis 11:5; 18:17;
Numbers11:25; Exodus 3:8) and “up” (Genesis 35:13) or “away,” (Genesis18:33) when He
already present everywhere. (Psalm 139:7; 1 Kings 8:27; Jeremiah 23:23; Acts17:28) It says the
Lord “forgets” (Jeremiah 23:39; Hosea4:6; Psalm 13:1; 42:9) and “remembers” (Genesis 9:16;
19:29;Ex 2:24; 6:4; Isaiah 43:26; 49:13, etc.) even though He never forgets. (Amos 8:7; Hebrews
5:10; Psalm 111:5) It describes Him as repenting or changing his mind (Genesis 6:6; Exodus
32:14; Judges 2:18; 1 Samuel 15:35; 2 Samuel 24:16;1 Chronicles 21:15; Psalm 106:45;
Jeremiah 26:19; Amos 7:3; Jonah 3:10) even though He never does. (1 Samuel 15:29; Numbers
23:19; Romans 11:29; Psalm 33:11; 132:11; Proverbs 19:21, Malachi 3:7; Job 23:13;
Ecclesiastes 3:14)

12. Other Figurative Language
Furthermore, God is often described in symbolic terms: God is a rock, a fortress (2 Samuel 22:2),
a sun, a shield (Psalm 84:11), a fire (Deuteronomy 4:24), a banner (Exodus 17:15), and many
others. Each of these metaphors tells us something about God, but will only confuse us if we take
them literally.
When Jesus was telling His disciples about Himself He used a figure of speech: He spoke of “the
Father” and “the Son.” He told His disciples, “I still have many things to say to you, but you
cannot bear them now…. These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time
is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly
about the Father.” (John 16:25) Jesus spoke in parables or symbolic language so often that the
Bible says, “without a parable He did not speak to them.” (Matthew 13:34)
The Right Hand Is Symbolic
It was in other Gospels, but at about the same time, that Jesus said to His disciples that they
would see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of God. Like other figurative language, the
“right hand” and “arm” are often symbolic, as we can see from many examples:
“I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.”
(Psalm 16:8) If we think of God spatially, it doesn't make sense that He is both always in front of
us and always at the right hand, and that we never move. But this passage is not about the
outward appearance, but the inward reality: God is in always in front of me in the sense that I am
always thinking of Him, and always at my right hand in the sense of always giving support and
strength.
“Behold, the days are coming that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, so
that there will not be an old man in your house.” (1 Samuel 2:31) These words to Eli did not
mean the Lord would literally cut off his arm, but that Eli and his family would lose their
strength.
Other passages are obviously symbolic: “...Whose mouth speaks vain words, and whose right
hand is a right hand of falsehood.” (Psalm 144:8) “Length of days is in her right hand, In her left
hand riches and honor.” (Proverbs 3:16) “By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the
armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left....” (2 Corinthians 6:7) “O LORD, be
gracious to us; We have waited for You. Be their arm every morning, Our salvation also in the
time of trouble.” (Isaiah 33:2)
God’s Right Hand
The Bible is especially symbolic when speaking of the hand or the arm of God. Perhaps a simple
person might have thought of God as being like Zeus, an old man up in the clouds who throws
thunderbolts down at the earth with his powerful right hand. But looking at passages in the Bible,
we can see that God’s “right hand” is a metaphor for God’s power.
The connection with power is obvious: “You have a mighty arm; Strong is Your hand, and high
is Your right hand.” (Psalm 89:13) Moses speaks of “the great trials which your eyes saw, the
signs and the wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm, by which the LORD your God
brought you out.” (Deuteronomy 7:19)

13. Many of these passages are clearly metaphorical. For example: “Your right hand, O LORD, has
become glorious in power; Your right hand, O LORD, has dashed the enemy in pieces.” (Exodus
15:6) This was speaking of the drowning of the Egyptians in the Red Sea. No one literally saw a
big arm reaching down from heaven and grabbing the Egyptians. But they did see the Lord’s
power at work.
“For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, Nor did their own arm save
them; But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance.” (Psalm 44:3)
Again, this refers not to a literal arm reaching down from the clouds, but to the Lord's power
working in people and nature to help them conquer the land.
Other passages are obviously symbolic, almost as if the right hand is a person: “And Your right
hand shall teach You awesome things.” (Psalm 45:4) “Your right hand is full of righteousness.”
(Psalm 48:10) “Awake, awake, put on strength, O Arm of the LORD!” (Isaiah 51:9) “Behold, the
Lord GOD shall come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him.” (Isaiah 40:10)
Everyday Language
We speak metaphorically in our everyday language. A “right hand man” is not someone who is
always at a person’s right hand. Rather it means someone who is a chief assistant or strong
supporter. To sit at the right hand of someone is symbolic of being very close to them,
indispensable, useful, and honored, like the youngest child of Jacob, named Benjamin or “Son of
the Right Hand.” We speak of an arm of a government or organization meaning a branch or
division of it. When we speak of the long arm of the law, we know we mean the power or
authority of the law. Why would we think any differently of the “outstretched arm” of the Lord?
Jesus Has All Power
At the end of the Gospel of Matthew Jesus said to His disciples, “And Jesus came and spoke to
them, saying, “All power has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” (Matthew 28:18) In the
Gospel of Mark the same idea is stated metaphorically: “After the Lord had spoken to them, He
was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.” (Mark 16:19) Being at the
right hand of God is taking on the power of God, not being in a certain location.
Jesus had predicted that some would see Him at the right hand of the power of God. (Luke
22:69; Mark 14:62; Matthew 26:64). One who saw this was Stephen, who just before his death
cried out, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of
God!” (Acts 7:56) These passages mention seeing Jesus, but do not describe any other God or
mention seeing God standing beside Jesus. This is because “No one has seen God at any time.
The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has manifested Him.” (John 1:18,
1 John 4:12) The Father is invisible: “You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His
form.” (John 5:37; 6:46) But in Jesus, the Divine Soul has taken on a visible, Divine, Human
form. Christ is called the “image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15; 2 Corinthians 4:4) and
“the form of God. (Philemon 2:6) As Paul said, we see “the glory of God in the face of Jesus
Christ,” (2 Corinthians 4:6). We are not to think of Jesus beside another person who is also God,
but to think of the Father as being within Jesus, for He says, “the Father dwells in Me” (John
14:10). “In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” (Colossians 2:9)

Right hand of God is a term that can be found everywhere in the
scripture. The term right hand of God is not `a mere term; it has deep meaning beyond what it
reads. In other words it is a metaphoric term representing something other than what it reads.
Now, literally the term means the right hand side of God. For instance the quotation below says
that;
“I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”
Psalms 16:8
You can as well read this teaching “The name above every name”
Also in the same chapter we have something like this;
”Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are
pleasures for evermore.”

15. In the above quotations the right hand of God is mentioned. In it, David said “at thy right hand
there are pleasures for evermore.” The question is where is the right hand of God? And in fact
does God have a right hand? The answer to this question is very important to every bible student.
The term right hand is the Hebrew word yamiyn (yaw-meen’) which of course is the same with
Arabic language. The word yamiyn means the right hand side. However, it is more of a political
term in the sense that it is a term that revolves within the political circle. Therefore, to be at the
right hand side means to be on the acceptable side. What David infers in the verses above is that
on the acceptable side of God there are pleasures for evermore.

Jacob’s Right Hand:
Furthermore, we are going to explore the word acceptable side, but before that let’s read through
this scenario below.
“And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh
in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near unto him. And Israel stretched
out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon
Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn. And he blessed
Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed
me all my life long unto this day. The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads;
Also, and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; let
them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased
him: he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head. And
Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father: for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his
head. And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a
people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his
seed shall become a multitude of nations.”

The Law Of First Mention:
Interestingly, in the above quotations is the first time the term right hand was mentioned in the
bible. And what we see is a situation where Joseph was protesting because his father has placed
his right hand on the head of his younger son. The reality is that his father intentionally did what
he did because he wants to transfer authority to the younger son. Therefore, being at the right
hand is not just being at the acceptable side but also being at a place of authority. David speaking
in the Psalms says that
“In whose hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes.”
(Psalms 26:10).

The term their right hand is full of bribes means that their place of authority or authority is
polluted with bribery. It is a place where injustice reigns and as a result in the process of
dispensing their authority there is lack of righteousness. At the right hand of people that do not

16. know God there is no pleasure and joy. Their right hand epitomizes and amplifies wickedness
against their subjects.
However, let’s see how this affects the position of a believer in Christ. In the gospel of Mark,
Jesus speaking says that;
“And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and
coming in the clouds of heaven.”
Mark 14:62
In the verse above, Jesus used the term ‘right hand of power’ meaning that He sits on a place of
power. Again, in Luke 22:69 Jesus made the same statement as stipulated below;
“Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
Jesus Spoke Of Right Hand:

What Jesus was communicating to His audience is something that
will take place after His resurrection. This was confirmed in several places in the book of Acts,
let’s see some of them.
“Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise

Acts 2:33
“Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to
Israel, and forgiveness of sins”

that wherever Christ is where the believer is. Apostle Pater has this to say;
“Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers
being made subject unto him.”
1 Peter 3:22
So in heaven Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God, a place of authority and powers. And all
believers are raised to sit with Christ in the heavenly; therefore, the believer is in a place of
power and authority. The believer is not in need of power but has been placed in a place of
power and authority.

When Scripture uses the image of God’s right hand, it is meant to be a picture of the pinnacle of

portion of the world is right-handed, so most people resonate with the sense of dexterity,
strength, and ability coming from the right hand versus the left.
However, when Scripture uses the image of God’s right hand, it is meant to be a picture of the

Right Hand of God: Promise
One day, the enemies of our God will be put in their rightful place.
“The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your
feet.’” (Psalm 110:1)
The Holy Spirit is the seal of promise in our hearts, and it was only when Jesus went back to sit
at the right hand of the Father that the way was made for the Holy Spirit’s ministry in our lives.
“This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. Therefore, having been exalted
to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He
has poured forth this which you both see and hear.” (Acts 2:32-33)
Our Lord Jesus, who loves us, sits at God’s right hand interceding on our behalf!
“Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who
condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of
God, who also intercedes for us.” (Romans 8:33-34)

Observations

2. The revealed Glory of God is Jesus Christ
1. In part, the authority of God declared in Jesus Christ, is authority to judge (by the Law, and Gospel .. ie The
Word). In this light review Revelation 4&5.
2. It is most often used figuratively, as in Acts 5:31. It should no be considered apart from it's Old Testament
origin.
3. The issue of being "seated" is not related to the physicalposture of God.
"Right Hand" or "Right Side" ?
The Greek term DEXIOS1 is used about 52 times in the New Testament. It is in fact an indication of relationship, or
orientation, and is translated idiomatically into "right hand" almost universally in the New Testament, although the
term CHEIR (kheir, Strongs #5495) which literally translates to "hand" does not appearin any of the references to
the "right hand of God" listed above, including those ofRevelation, though it is used when a literal reference to the
hand is required.
In the Greek, the oreintation of left and right are expressed by a pair of words, EUONUMOS, and DEXIOUS. If an
equivalent vocabulary was available to English, a single word would refer to the orientation, and imply the hand, as

21. determined by context. Anotherword would provide the same reflection of the opposite side. In English, the word
right might be used to implicitly refer to the actual hand,but typically, the word HAND must be added to clarify.
Thus,the subtly of Greek was not duplicable in English, and the translators added the word hand desiring to convey
orientation through the popular use of the idiom. To make matters more difficult, the Greek never distinguishes from
literal and figurative by adding CHEIR to the orientation word. Because of this, it should be understood that where
HAND is added to LEFT or RIGHT in English, as translating from Greek, it will only sometimes relate to a literal
hand.
It is more easy to see clearly in this when we examine the regular tendancy of English to utilize the noun abstractly
where the adjective already relates to orientation. For example, the "right hand side" does not relate to a hand,but
rather to the side of an object which would be adjacent to the observer's actual right hand. The phrase "on the other
hand",simple means "the other side".
Orientation not only refers to geometric or spacial dimensions, but also extends into the realm of relationship, role
and identity. A "right hand man" acquires the title from more than just an antiquated remnant of speech.The two
orientations have various denotations,some of which transcend culture.
Our concern is with the Greek, since we seek the meaning of words originally expressed in that setting.With that in
mind, and seeing person of Jesus Christ in the RIGHT HAND orientation with respect to deity, considerthe
contrasting meanings of LEFT and RIGHT in Greek:
EUONUMOS or "left hand"
From Thayers: "1) of good name and of good omen, 2) in the latter sense used in taking auguries; but those omens
were euphemistically called "euonumos" which in fact were regarded as unlucky, i.e. which came from the left,
sinister omens, (for which a good name was desired) "
In the Greek, the left related to a good reputation or name.
DEXIOUS or "right hand"
Thayers has "a place of honouror authority".Strongs adds "from the right (or feminine hand), as that which usually
takes.
WHERE DOES JESUS STAND ?
If looking toward the heavens for God, one were to see Jesus,where would the Savior appear with respect to the
God that made mankind, and which mankind seeks for healing, deliverance and salvation ?
When JEWS, the first audience with Jesus Christ, were positioned for an encounterwith God, God's REPUTATION
and HONOR were not in question.Followers of Moses had no dispute with God when he required " For I am the
LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt,to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy , for I am holy ." Lev
11:45
God's reputation was unblemished, rather it was man's reputation that left him separated from hope, and needing a
Savior. It was the means of approach which was wanting, or at least, it was man's ability to approach God, th rough
the methods revealed at that time, that was in question.. All were known lawbreakers, all were without merit, or
righteousness.The Law could reveal the holiness of God, and even replicate in type and shadowGod's revealed way
of approach, but it could not transform man to be quailfied to follow that path!
The WONDER of the incarnation is that the very God, whose holiness and power was in itself the weight of
judgment against man's transgression,had Himself become flesh and paid the price of sin in his mortal frame. Unto
the Apostles,this was nothing short of awesome. It was an undeniable call to worship and obedience to this Great
God and Savior!
Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate,the King of kings,and Lord o f lords; Who
only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto;whom no man hath seen, nor can see:
to whom [be] honourand power everlasting.Amen. - 1 Tim 6:15
As stones crushed life out of his earthly tabernacle Stephen looked up, and His path was uninhibited. Stephen had
received the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in baptism, Stephen had received the Spirit of the Mighty God into his
life to reveal the fullness of the riches in Jesus Christ to Him. As he looked up, he saw One who HE KNOW
PERSONALLY standing in the PLACE OF RECEPTION, and IN THE PLACE OF HONOR AND POWER..

22. When mortal man seeks God, the wonderful revelation of God in Christ Jesus does not stand at the EUONUMOS of
God, rather Jesus was seen as the DEXIOUS of God. Jesus does NOT demonstrate God's reputation, as much as
Jesus demonstrates His POWER and WILLINGNESS TO RECEIVE man into the fellowship of eternal salvation.
While feminine, as receiver, the DEXIOUS equally imparts the power and authority. Through Jesus we know that
God not only DESIRES to SAVE, but has extended HIS AUTHORITY and POWER "to take out of them a people
for his name" (Acts 15:14)
Praise GOD! Who can stand between us and eternal life, if we have come to know the one who HAS LIFE,
personally! God has ordained that Jesus,standing in representation of His and at the RECEIVING
"For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world ; but that the world through him might be saved." -
John 3:17
"For this [is] good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved,and to come
unto the knowledge of the truth.For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ
Jesus;" -1 Tim 2:3-5
Old Testament
The Old Testament references cited above exclusively derive from the Hebrew term "yamin" which, just like it's
Greek counterpart refers to the right side, the opposite of the left side. Again, the respective Hebrew term for hand,
or arm (yad) does not appear in conjunction with "right" in the original language. However, God does frequently
refer to his operations and sovereign activities as being carried out by his hand, or arm, for example:
"And it shall be when thine son asketh thee in time to come, saying What is this ? that thou shalt say unto him, By
strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage" Exodus 7:15
The actual references in the Old Testament to the figure of the "right hand" number in the hundreds.
Interestingly, the term right is used in Ecclesiastes: " wise man's heart is at his right hand, but a fools heart is at his
left" - Eccl 10:2
Looking deeper into other references to the hand …
a. It is considered to be responsible for action. In Matthew 18:8… "Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee,
cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two
hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire."
b. It is authoritative. The honor and dominion of the person is symbolized by his hand. From Joshua 11:8 ... "And
the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel."
We might add that the Bible repeatedly pictures leprosy,a disease epitomizing sin wherein fingers, hands,feet and
other extremities are desensitized and finally lost, as attacking the hand as in Exodus 4:6.
It is in with these facts in mind that we must considerthe combining of the terms "right" and "hand" (or arm). The
right is a place of honorand exaltation, the place that the Living God now occupies before the race of Adam, having
purged our sins while revealing "the power of God unto salvation",in the person of Jesus Christ. The hand is the
instrument of action, and the member of power. Looking back now unto the days of the prophets from where only
dimly did the light of hope enter the soul, considerthat condition and then the faith of David in Psalm 77:10 ...
"And I said this is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High".
All hope in those days was focused upon whatever lay beyond the gruesome smoke and horror of that flaming
brazen altar, but the prophet gave some insight into that hope:
"Now I know that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven by the saving strength of
his right hand." -Psalm 20:6
Upon the rending of the Temple veil, the situation changed completely and forever, Praise the Lord! When the
conquest was complete, Jesus pronounced from His place of glorification, "It is finished". As a triumphant Prince,
returning from the ultimate victory, his position in eternity was forever established as enlightened by Hebrews 10:12

"But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God:"

23. Articulately, the writer identifies the seated deity as a man! The work of salvation had been done,Jesus Christ, the
God-Man has proven the power of Salvation, and is himself that power to every applicant. As John tells us ... "But
as many as received him, to them he gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his
name. " John 1:12
To further elaborate, sons of the only begotten,through the rebirth of the water and the Spirit. Again, it is a man
seated upon the throne of the universe! He is no pretenderunto the throne of the human heart, having received
exaltation by Eternal God, and before all men. We can say with confidence that God underwent a transformation to
bring salvation according to 1 Timothy 3:16. He, the Savior, is displayed before the world without a flaw, being the
express image of God (Heb 1:3).
As the peace of God settled Stephen, passing unto his promise, He saw precisely what the prophet predicted ... "And
the glory of the LORD shall be revealed and all flesh shall seeit, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it." Isa 40:5
Notice that it is recorded that Stephen saw only one identity or bodily presence in the phrase from Acts 7:55 - "the
glory of God and Jesus".
Nowhere is it indicated that "the glory of God" is other that the very person of Jesus Christ. In Acts 7:56, we see
Jesus standing in the place of power. The word "standing" is translated from the Greek "Isthmi" (histemi), which as
in English is used figuratively to indicate "established" or"appointed".Thus there is no contradiction between
Hebrews 8:1 and Acts 7:56, and noting this we should also admit that neither verse provides any information
regarding a location of Jesus an a imagined separate Father God in heaven.
How appropriate for the Holy Ghost to move Peter to declare Psalm 110, insofar as this one-time-only event is the
public record of the most awesome work of God ever witnessed by mankind!
"This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we are all witnesses,Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted ...
For David is not ascended into the heavens,but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my LORD sit thou on my
right hand until I make thine foes thy footstool" (Acts 2:32-34)
Summary
The anthropomorphic reference to God's hand is more than appropriate in anticipating and later exemplifying the
purpose of God's manifestation in human flesh. The hand refers to action, and is the first place of encounter.
A comparison of the implications of right vs left is a meaningful component of the message of scripture, when Jesus
Christ, or pre-figured Christ is in focus through this instrument.
Often we have heard mentioned that the RIGHT represents power and authority, describing Jesus as triumphing over
sin, but further evaluation shows that the authority of God stands to usherman into the presence of an otherwise
unapproachable God. Both hands (sides)of God are visible in Jesus Christ. If the hand of God is extended towards
man then, it is a hand of acceptance and reception. There is salvation in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Having defused the error of language shortcomings, let us feast on the true revelation of the wonderful face of the
Everlasting Father, the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD.

The right hand of God must indeed be a wonderful place to be! When someone is described as
being the right hand man of another, it connotes the image of someone who is indispensable,
important, reliable, that can be trusted and can deputize for the top man. In some cultures and
governments, the most trusted adviser sits at the right hand of the leader. When favors are needed
from the leader, an appeal to his right hand man may yield the desired result. The right hand man
may be more accessible than the leader and when you have his ear, it is as good as having the ear
of the leader himself.
His son, Jesus Christ, occupies the right hand of God. Before he died, Jesus had predicted where
he was going and what position he would occupy in his Father’s kingdom. This was at the time
when Jesus Christ was brought before Caiaphas the high priest and false witnesses had just
accused him. When asked by Caiaphas to respond to these allegations, Jesus Christ said nothing.
Caiaphas was very surprised that he said in Mathew 26 verses 63and 64 “I adjure thee by the
living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God”. Jesus saith unto him,
“Thou hast said, nevertheless, I say unto you, hereafter shall ye see the Son of Man sitting on the
right hand of power, and coming in the clouds in heaven”. Also in Luke 22 verse 69, Jesus Christ
confirmed this when he said, “Hereafter shall the son of man sit on the right hand of the power of
God”.
Many verses in the Bible confirm the place of Jesus at the right hand of God .For example Mark
16 verse 19, records,“So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, he was received up into
heaven, and sat on the right hand of God”. In Acts 2 verse 33, the Bible says “Therefore being at

25. the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost,
he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear”. Romans 8 verse 34 us”. Colossians 3 verse
1 says,” If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth
on the right hand of God ”. Not man. ”.Hebrews 10 verse 12 says “But this man, after he had
offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God”. Hebrews 12 verse 2
says “ looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith: who for the joy that was set before
him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of
God”. 1st Peter 3 verse 22 says, “Who is gone unto into heaven, and is on the right hand of God;
angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him”
Stephen, the first Christian martyrs made confirmation of the supremacy and Excellency of Jesus
in his place at the right hand of God. In Acts 7 verse 55, the Bible records that “ When they
heard all these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. But
he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God,
and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. And said,’behold, I see the heavens opened and the
Son of man standing on the right hand of God”.
Jesus is not sitting idly at the right hand of God. That is not in his nature. Even when he was here
on earth, all his waking moments were either spent praying, preaching, healing or doing good
works. In heaven right now, Jesus is busy interceding for us before God the Father. This is
confirmed in Romans 8 verse 34, which says, “Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died,
yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession
for us”. Therefore when we pray in the name of Jesus he hears us and he pleads with God the
Father on our behalf. He is in the best position to do this because he has lived on earth as a
human being. He has gone through the whole gamut of human emotions. He has experienced
pain [he was crucified on the cross at Calvary] and anguish [when his friend Lazarus died] .He
knows what lack, loss, affliction, oppression, false accusation and death means .He has met
needs before [he fed the multitudes] and he knows what disappointment and betrayal is [denial
by Peter, betrayal by Judas]. He was not acknowledged as a great man by his own people- [“a
prophet is without honor, save in his own country and in his own house” see Mathew 13 verse
57]. Since he is experienced, he is the best advocate or attorney we can possibly have. He knows
exactly how we feel when we call to him for help and with the same feelings and emotions he
intercedes for us before our Father in heaven. Hebrews 8 verses 1-2 says “ Now of the things
which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is at the right hand of
the throne of the Majesty in the heavens. A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle,
which the Lord pitched and not man.” Jesus Christ is therefore fulfilling his role as a high priest.
This line of priesthood started with Aaron and the Levites.
In the Old Testament, any prayer or intercession had to go through the priests who offered
sacrifices on behalf of the people. However, with the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross, there is
no need to shed the blood of bulls and rams. Jesus Christ made the ultimate sacrifice by laying
down his own precious life for the forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 9 verses 6-7 paints a good
picture of this” Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first
tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. But into the second went the High priest alone
once every year, not without the blood which he offered for himself, and for the errors of others”
Verses 11 –17 of the same chapter continues thus “ But Christ being come an high priest of good
things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say,
nothing of this building. Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he

26. entered into once the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if by the blood
of bulls and of goats and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying
of the flesh. How much more shall the blood of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
And for this cause he is the mediator of the New Testament, that by means of death, for the
redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might
receive the promise of eternal inheritance [Verse 22] “ And almost all things are by the law
purged with blood, and without shedding of blood is no remission”.
Apart from his present role as a High priest who is at the right hand of God, Jesus will return to
earth as a King who will judge the world. Interestingly, the prophet Daniel had seen the vision of
the kingship of the Son of Man many years before Jesus was born. In Daniel 7 verses 13-14, it
says “I saw in the night visions, and behold one like the Son of man came with the clouds of
heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before them. And there was
given him dominion and glory, and a kingdom that all people, all nations and languages should
serve him: his dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that shall not be
destroyed”.

A confirmation of the vision of Daniel came after the death of Jesus in the revelation of St John
the Divine. In Revelation 19 verses 11-16, John records “”And I saw heaven opened, and behold
a white horse: and he that sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth
judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns, and he
had a mane written, that no man knew but he himself. And he was clothed with vesture dipped in
blood: and his name is called the Word of God. And the armies, which were in heaven, followed
him upon the white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a
sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he treadeth the winepress of the
fierceness and the wrath of Almighty God. And he had on his vesture and on his thigh a name
written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
The kingdom of Christ is clearly illustrated in the Book of Revelation Chapter 11 verses 15 –
18.”And the seventh angel sounded: and there were great voices in heaven, saying,’ The
kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ and he shall
reign for ever and ever. The four and twenty Elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell
upon the faces and worshipped God. Saying ‘we give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which
art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.
And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be
judged, and that thou shouldst give reward unto thy servants, the prophets, and to thy saints, and
them that fear thy name, small and great: and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth”

hand of God?
-Question: "Why does Scripture emphasize the right hand of God?"
Answer: The Scripture has several words translated "right" and the usage of the term, "right
hand" ranges from a direction, to the opposite of wrong, what is just or what conforms to an
established standard, and to a place of honor or authority. In the case of division or appointment
in the Bible, the right hand or right side came first, as when Israel (Jacob) divided the blessings
to Joseph’s sons before he died (Genesis 48:13-14).
In addition, a person of high rank who put someone on his right hand gave him equal honor with
himself and recognized him as possessing equal dignity and authority. And this is what the
Apostle Paul writes of Jesus Christ in Ephesians. "And what is the surpassing greatness of His
power toward us, the ones believing according to the working of His mighty strength which He
worked in Christ in raising Him from the dead, and He seated Him at His right hand in the
heavenlies, far above all principality and authority and power and dominion, and every name
being named, not only in this world, but also in the coming age" (Ephesians 1:19-21). Here we
see God exalting Jesus above all others by seating Him at the right hand of the Father.
The term "God’s right hand" in prophecy refers to the Messiah to whom is given the power and
authority to subdue His enemies (Psalm 110:1; Psalm 118:16). We find a quote in Matthew
22:44 from Psalm 110:1, which is a Messianic Psalm. "The Son of David" is claimed by the
LORD Jesus Christ as He is the "greater son of David" or the Messiah. In this passage of
Matthew 22, Jesus questions the Pharisees about who they think the "Christ" or the Messiah is.
"While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Saying, What think ye of Christ?
Whose son is He? They say unto him, The Son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth
David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
till I make Thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call Him Lord, how is He his son?"
(Matthew 22:41-45, KJV). The position of the Messiah is at God’s right hand.
The fact that Jesus Christ is at the "right hand of God" was a sign to the disciples that Jesus had
indeed gone to heaven. In John 16:7-15, Jesus told the disciples that He had to go away and He
would send the Holy Spirit. So the coming of the Holy Spirit in the upper room on the day of
Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13) was proof positive that Jesus was indeed in heaven seated at the right
hand of God. This is confirmed in Romans 8:34 where the Apostle Paul writes that Christ is
sitting at God’s right hand making intercession for us.
Therefore, what we can say is that "God’s right hand" refers to the Messiah, the LORD Jesus
Christ and He is of equal position, honor, power and authority with God (John 1:1-5). The fact
that Christ is "sitting" refers to the fact that His work of redemption is done and when the
fullness of the gentiles is brought in (Romans 11:25), Christ’s enemies will be made His
footstool as the end of the age comes, all prophecy is completed, and time is no more.

• The Hand of Authority
• You’ve probably heard the phrase “he’s my right hand man” but where does this phrase
come from? I believe it comes from the Bible. This words “right hand” occurs 166 times in the
Bible so it is no accident that the words “right hand” has significant meaning. God inspired
Isaiah to write “For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not,
I am the one who helps you” (Isaiah 41:13). The right hand signifies strength, perhaps because
most people are right-handed and that is the hand that normally has their greatest strength. Most
people write with their right hand, they do the most difficult things with their right hand, and it is
the hand where the strength typically occurs.
• The religious leaders were constantly trying to trap and trick Jesus into enigmatic
questions so He once told them “The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make
your enemies your footstool” (Luke 20:42-43) which, being at the right hand, is the place of
authority to whoever sits on the throne, and in this case, it was about God the Father and Jesus
being the one who was to be and is currently seated at the right hand of the Father. Jesus made
reference to this during His illegal trial saying “from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at
the right hand of the power of God” (Luke 22:69). That is where the Son of God is presently at.
This is mentioned in Mark 16:19 “So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken
up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.”
James and John once came up to Jesus and asked Him “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand
and one at your left, in your glory” (Mark 10:37) but Jesus responded “to sit at my right hand or
at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared” (Mark 10:40).
The other disciples knew what this meant which was why “they began to be indignant at James
and John” (Mark 10:41) so it is evident that being at the right hand is symbolic of having
authority and power. This is seen throughout the Scriptures as in Paul writing about God that He
“raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all

29. rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this
age but also in the one to come” (Eph 1:20-21).
The Hand of Blessing
The ancient patriarchs usually blessed their children and grandchildren with their right hand as
with the case of Jacob, whose name was later changed by God to Israel, for example when
“Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and
his left hand on the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn)” (Gen
48:14).

The Hand of Strength
I mentioned that the right hand is the one which, for most people, has the greatest strength and
that is symbolized in many Scriptures when it refers to God as in Exodus 15:6 “Your right hand,
O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy” and often used against
His enemies as in Exodus 15:12 “You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them.”
Just prior to Moses’ death He blessed Israel with this blessing, “The Lord came from Sinai and
dawned from Seir upon us; he shone forth from Mount Paran; he came from the ten thousands of
holy ones, with flaming fire at his right hand” (Duet 33:2). These “ten thousands of holy ones”
are likely speaking about God’s holy angels. When John saw Jesus he “fell at his feet as though
dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying “Fear not, I am the first and the last” (Rev 1:17) so
by His right hand He strengthened him. Isaiah provides further evidence of this by writing “fear
not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help
you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

30. The Sacrificial Significance of the Right Side
When Aaron and his sons performed animal sacrifices, God instructed them “you shall kill the
ram and take part of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tips of the
right ears of his sons, and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the great toes of their right
feet, and throw the rest of the blood against the sides of the altar” (Ex 29:20) and at another time
Aaron took the sacrifice and “he killed it, and Moses took some of its blood and put it on the
lobe of Aaron’s right ear and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot”
(Lev 8:23). Even in the anointing of the oil was done on the right side as when they took “some
of the oil that remains in his hand the priest shall put on the lobe of the right ear of him who is to
be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot, on top of the
blood of the guilt offering” (Lev 14:17).
The Hand of Sovereignty
In the Book of Revelation we see Jesus using His right hand throughout like “in the right hand of
him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven
seals” (Rev 5:1), and having taken “the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the
throne” (Rev 5:7), He held the “scroll open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea” (Rev
10:2), and “In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword,
and his face was like the sun shining in full strength” (Rev 1:16) of which the stars represented
the seven churches. The right hand and the right foot both symbolize sovereignty and authority.
Conclusion
Clearly we see that the right hand is symbolic of ruler-ship, authority, sovereignty, blessing, and
strength and is significant in Scripture. We even see this in separating the sheep from the goats at
the judgment as Jesus said “Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate
people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the
sheep on his right, but the goats on the left” (Matt 25:32-33). Being on the right side is critical to
our eternal destiny and fatal to those on the left. For all who trust in Christ, they will be placed
on the right hand side of Christ because they will have imputed to them the very righteousness of
the Son of God (2 Cor 5:21).

31. Right hand
That the right hand of Jehovah denotes omnipotence, is because by hand in the Word is signified
power, and thus by right hand eminent power; consequently when the hand or right hand is said
of Jehovah, it denotes Divine power, or omnipotence. Hand and right hand denote power, (AC
878, 4931-4937, 6292, 6947, 7188, 7189, 7518); and when predicated of Jehovah, omnipotence,
(AC 3387, 7518, 7673, 8050, 8069, 8153).
[2] That the right hand of Jehovah denotes Divine power, or omnipotence, is also evident from
the following passages in the Word:--
Jesus said, Henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and
coming upon the clouds of heaven (Matt. 26:64; Mark 14:62).
From henceforth shall the Son of man be sitting at the right hand of the power of God (Luke
22:69).
The saying of Jehovah unto my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make thine enemies a
footstool for thy feet; thou art a priest forever after the manner of Melchizedek, the Lord at
thy right hand hath smitten kings in the day of anger (Ps. 110:1, 4, 5; Matt. 22:44).
He who does not know that the right hand, when said of Jehovah, signifies omnipotence, cannot
receive any other idea from these words of the Lord, than that the Lord will sit at the right hand
of His Father, and have dominion like one who sits at the right hand of a king on earth. But the
internal sense teaches what is meant in these passages by sitting at the right hand, namely, the
Divine omnipotence; consequently it is also said, to sit at the right hand of power, and at the right
hand of the power of God.
[3] That it is the Lord who has omnipotence, is manifest; for this is said of the Lord, and by the
Lord in David is meant the Lord in respect to Divine truth, and also by the Son of man in the
Evangelists; for Divine truth is that which has omnipotence from Divine good. Divine truth has
omnipotence, (AC 6948, 8200); in general power belongs to truth from good, (AC 3091, 3563,
4231, 6344, 6493); and consequently hand is predicated of truth, (AC 3091, 4931); and the Son
of man denotes the Divine truth proceeding from the Lord, (AC 2159, 2803, 2813, 3704).
[4] Divine power or omnipotence is also signified by the right hand in the following passages in
David:--
Now know I that Jehovah saveth His anointed; they will answer Him in heaven through the
powers of the salvation of His right hand (Ps. 20:6).
O Jehovah, look from the heavens, and see, and visit this vine; and the shoot which Thy right
hand hath planted, upon the son Thou hadst made strong for Thyself (Ps. 80:14, 15, 17).
Thou hast an arm with might; strong is Thy hand, exalted shall be Thy right hand (Ps. 89:13).
My strength and song is Jah, He is become my salvation; the voice of shouting and of
salvation is in the tents of the righteous, the right hand of Jehovah hath done valiantly, the
right hand of Jehovah is exalted, the right hand of Jehovah hath done valiantly (Ps. 118:14-
16).
[5] In these passages the right hand of Jehovah denotes omnipotence; and in the supreme sense
the Lord as to Divine truth. This is more evident elsewhere in David:--

32. Let Thy hand, O Jehovah, be for the man of Thy right hand, for the son of man Thou hast
made strong for Thyself (Ps. 80:17);
where the man of the right hand of Jehovah, and the son of man, denote the Lord as to Divine
truth. In the same:--
Thou hast driven out the nations with Thy hand, not by their sword have they possessed the
land, and their arm hath not saved them, but Thy right hand, and Thine arm, and the light of
Thy faces (Ps. 44:2, 3);
where the light of the faces of Jehovah denotes Divine truth from Divine good; so also the right
hand, and the arm. And in Isaiah:--
God hath sworn by His right hand, and by the arm of His strength (Isa. 62:8);
here also the right hand of God, and the arm of His strength denote the Lord as to Divine truth;
for Jehovah or the Lord does not swear by any other than Himself (AC 2842), thus by the Divine
truth, for this is Himself, because from Himself.
[6] Hence it is that in the Word throughout the Lord is called not only the right hand and arm of
Jehovah, but also the strength by which He breaks in pieces enemies, and likewise the hammer,
as in (Jer. 51:20, 21). Moreover the Lord came into the world, and there became Divine truth,
and afterward Divine good from which is Divine truth, in order that He might shut up all evils
and falsities in the hells, and gather together goods and truths into the heavens, and there dispose
them into Divine order. From all this it is now evident that by the right hand of Jehovah in the
Word is signified the omnipotence which the Divine has by means of Divine truth. That the right
hand denotes eminent power, derives its origin from the fact that they who in the Grand Man or
heaven have relation to the shoulders, the arms, and the hands, are they who are powerful from
the truth which is from good; that is, from the faith which is from love (AC 4931-4937, 7518).

Why should Christians fear when we’re in God’s hands, the creator of the universe? He will
guide you through every tough situation and direct you on the right path. When we’re going
through trials we might not understand the moving hand of God, but later you will understand
why.

33. God is working when we’re asking questions. Allow Him to lead you. Follow the Holy Spirit.
Don’t turn away from God’s will. Humble yourself before the Lord and trust in Him. Trust that
God will lead you out of the fire, but you must allow Him to guide you. Commit to Him in
prayer.
Don’t think to yourself it’s not working don’t stop seeking His face until the battle is won. Study
God’s Word daily to better understand and recognize His hand working in your life.
