Julia Efimova is a 21-year-old Russian Olympic swimmer who was born in Grozny and moved to Volgodonsk and Taganrog to train in swimming. She has won bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, bronze at the 2012 London Olympics in the 200m breaststroke, and set a new world record in the 50m breaststroke at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona where she won three gold medals. She now trains in California under American coach David Salo while still competing for Russia in international competitions.
Our Displays
Room 11's display showcased student work from their recent inquiries and lessons. The students collected food scraps for composting and made their own compost chart as part of an inquiry into ecological footprints. They also created Olympic athletes from newspaper cutouts and different colors to represent the Olympic flag as part of their study of the Beijing Olympics. In math, the students learned about fractions and made fraction art by shading parts of shapes to demonstrate their understanding.
2012 achievements
Victoria School had a very successful year in 2012 across various CCA achievements. They achieved 9 top 4 finishes at the national level in sports including winning the B Div 1 cross country and floorball competitions. They also had 6 top 4 finishes at the zonal level. In uniformed groups, they won gold awards for overall proficiency from NPCC and excellence and community service from Red Cross. They also won a gold award from Boys' Brigade. They had various performing arts achievements throughout March and April including performances by the Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Drama, Concert Band, English Drama, and Choir.

She has loved swimming since age 7 and has gone on to win 13 gold medals and set 6 world records in events like the 50m and 100m freestyle. Though her disability changed her life forever, her Christian faith has helped her through struggles and she has found success competing for Team USA in the Paralympics.

Stef Reid is a 27-year-old athlete from New Zealand who lives in Great Britain. She lost her leg in a boating accident in Canada where she grew up. While tubing behind a motorboat, she was hit by the propellers and her leg was so badly damaged it had to be amputated. Though devastated at first to lose her ability to play sports, she found a new passion in athletics and won a silver medal in long jump. She credits God for giving her a second chance at life after praying in the ambulance following her accident.
