Remarks by Commander Jeffrey Millican, Director of Intelligence (J2), Joint Information Support Task Force (Special Operations), Camp As Sayliyah, Doha, Qatar on the occasion of the Navy Birthday, 13 October 2012.
The Pilgrims arrived at Cape Cod in November and sent an exploration party by land to scout the area while repairs were made to their shallop. The explorers encountered Native Americans but were not able to communicate. They found signs of past cornfields and dwellings. A later exploration by shallop discovered two empty houses and stores of corn and beans, ensuring the Pilgrims' survival. In December, during another exploration, the group had a violent encounter with Native Americans but suffered no injuries. They took this as a sign from God and named the place the "First Encounter."
This document provides an introduction to the journal article "Maritime Slavery" by Philip D. Morgan. It discusses how maritime slavery involved the movement of enslaved people as commodities across oceans, but also the roles that slaves played as sailors, pilots, cooks, and other maritime jobs. It explores how the maritime world provided some opportunities for slaves, such as potential wages, literacy, and more autonomy compared to plantation work, but also entailed risks and abuse from racial prejudice. The introduction sets the stage for examining slavery's role within diverse maritime contexts, including the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.
Commodore David Conner and his Home Squadron faced significant challenges in preparing for and executing the largest amphibious landing in history at Veracruz, Mexico in 1847. With limited support from Washington, Conner had to expand his squadron, secure necessary supplies of coal, food and water, and ready his fleet to transport and support General Winfield Scott's army of 14,000 troops. Through decisive action, the landing was achieved without loss of life on March 9th. However, Conner's poor health led to his being relieved by Commodore Matthew Perry, who then provided naval support during the successful siege and capture of Veracruz.
The Sultana suffered the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history when three of its boilers exploded in 1865, killing around 1,700 Union soldiers who were passengers. The overloaded steamboat was carrying nearly 2,300 people, six times its capacity, as it traveled up the Mississippi River. When the boilers exploded near Memphis in the early morning hours, the ship split in two and sank within minutes, with only two lifeboats and 76 life preservers for the massive loss of life. Despite being such a catastrophic event, the sinking of the Sultana received little media coverage and attention at the time and has been largely forgotten by history books.
This document summarizes the bribery scandal involving Leonard Francis and his company GDMA overcharging the US Navy for maritime services. Francis cultivated relationships with high-ranking US Navy officers, providing lavish gifts and payments in exchange for classified information about ship movements. This allowed Francis to secure lucrative contracts and overcharge the Navy by millions over many years. The scandal came to light in 2013 when Francis was arrested. The document provides context on increased US military focus on Asia under the "Pacific pivot" policy, which unintentionally enabled Francis' scheme by increasing US naval presence in the region.
What was life like on board ship 500 years agoismhistory
Life aboard ships 500 years ago was difficult. Sailors slept and lived on the open deck due to lack of space below deck. They typically ate one hot meal per day of salted meat and fish if they were lucky, as fresh food would spoil. Water also became undrinkable after a few weeks at sea. Scurvy, caused by vitamin deficiency, was a common problem for sailors. Crews were divided into watches that worked for 4 hours then rested, and jobs included manning the sails, pumping water from the ship, and looking out from the crow's nest.
The document summarizes the author's experience speaking at a tribute event for Korean War veterans in Hernando, Mississippi. Some key details:
- The author witnessed veterans from multiple conflicts arriving and being honored at the event held outside the local courthouse.
- During the ceremony, a frail WWII Navy veteran struggled to stand and salute but was supported by a young Marine Corps master sergeant in a moving show of respect.
- This inspired the author to shift his planned speech to instead honor the legacy of service and sacrifice of the veterans present.
- The author's remarks highlighted how the "American spirit" of serving one's community and country is kept alive through events like this and in those who continue

Lecture on William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantationjcdmce
The Pilgrims were English Separatists who believed the Church of England could not be reformed. They fled religious persecution, first settling in the Netherlands but later deciding to relocate to America for greater freedom. In late 1620, the Mayflower departed England with 102 passengers, arriving in North America in November after a difficult 66-day voyage. The Pilgrims faced extreme hardship in that first brutal winter, with half of their group perishing due to sickness, lack of shelter, and scarcity of food. They were sustained only by the mercy of God and the selfless care of a few remaining strong individuals.
The Russian nuclear submarine Kursk sank in the Barents Sea off northern Russia during a naval exercise on August 12, 2000. An explosion occurred while the submarine was preparing to test fire a torpedo. The 118 crew members were unable to surface the submarine as it sank to the bottom over 350 feet below. No distress calls were received from the Kursk. The sinking received international attention and led to reforms in how Russia handles submarine disasters.
The document describes the difficult voyage and early settlement of the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It details their journey on the Mayflower, the hardships they faced including disease and harsh winter conditions that led to the deaths of about half of the original colonists. The document provides an eyewitness account of the Pilgrims' experiences through Governor William Bradford's journal Of Plymouth Plantation.
William Bradford was a Puritan who fled religious persecution in England and traveled to America on the Mayflower in 1620. The voyage was difficult, with many Puritans dying along the way. When they arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts, about half of the original Puritans died that first winter due to sickness and lack of shelter. Bradford became the governor and recorded their experiences, including the hardships of establishing one of the first American colonies. They survived through cooperation and by making peace with the local Wampanoag tribe under the sachem Massasoit.

Organization and common sense are ongoing processes that require continual effort. Having older, wiser children helps provide perspective on life's logical and illogical moments. While holidays may be overrated, family traditions are important for remembering one's roots. Nothing remains static; taking risks and pushing outside one's comfort zone are necessary for growth, even when it feels lonely or dangerous. The author wishes peace and blessings to friends and family each new day.

The United States Marines have a long history as an elite fighting force dating back to their origins as an infantry force of the British Royal Navy. They have established a reputation through heroic combat in many conflicts starting from the Revolutionary War. Marines undergo rigorous training focused on marksmanship, with excellent shooting skills demonstrated in World War I and II. Their training evolved with new weapons and tactics, but the emphasis on the rifle range remained important. Propaganda further bolstered the image of Marines as heroic fighters, especially in the Pacific theater of World War II where they engaged in brutal island-hopping campaigns against Japan.

The United States Marines have a long history as a highly effective fighting force, tracing their origins back to the British Royal Marines. They underwent rigorous training even in World War I to become expert marksmen and earn a reputation as "devil dogs." During World War II, the Marines led the fight in the Pacific against Japan through an "island hopping" campaign, while also facing brutal combat. Their training and propaganda efforts emphasized preparing Marines to win battles and protect America.

This thesis examined the 1814 sinking of the British vessel Mary tender during a squall in the Chesapeake Bay near Swan Point, Maryland. Using historical records and accounts from the HMS Menelaus, the author aimed to locate the wreck site. Background research on the War of 1812 context and vessels involved was presented. Then a survey area was defined based on the Menelaus logs and charts. In April 2013, the author conducted a marine archaeological survey of the area using magnetic and acoustic equipment. Several anomalies were discovered that could potentially be the remains of the Mary tender. While an exact identification was not made, the study increased understanding of this aspect of the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake region
This document summarizes the secondary military aim of weakening the opposing armed force and strengthening one's own forces. It discusses how armed forces depend on manpower, accumulated wealth, and the capacity to supply resources. It notes that nations try to impair the enemy's resources and increase their own through actions on land, sea and air, such as overrunning territory, destroying communications, levying contributions, and pressing populations into service. The ultimate goal is to prepare the conditions for victory by weakening the enemy and strengthening one's position through control of resources and support systems.
The document provides an overview of the history and development of the United States Marine Corps from its origins in 1775 to modern day operations. It traces the Marines' involvement in major conflicts including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War, and modern conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The presentation covers the Marines' defining battles, weapons, training processes, and reputation as a elite fighting force known for their combat effectiveness and heroism.
