The 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake in Japan killed 14,340 people, injured over 3,000, and left 11,889 people still missing. Over 1 million people were left homeless by the earthquake and resulting tsunami, which reached heights of 23 to 30 feet. The earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 9.4 and occurred along the Ring of Fire, a seismically and volcanically active belt around the Pacific Ocean basin.
